We live in an age of tablets, laptops and flat screen TV; so why do they still use those bulky metal monitors in the announce tables? They either end up seriously injuring someone or have to be removed before the spot takes place. Anyone able to shed any light?

Cheaper and look cooler hitting someone then a flat screen.

It's probably just easier to get those kinds of monitors than it would be to order a customized flat-screen monitor when they really don't need HD picture when doing commentary.

We all know Vince is a mark for the big monitors.

I would imagine they're also significantly more durable, not just for any time the table is used, but just for the wear and tear of being torn down and set up week to week.
The current monitors have probably been used for years while I imagine flat screens would have to be swapped out much more often.

Because they fear change.
Its part of what WWE thinks is thier classic "look" and changing it would be too "off brand."

Since you have to cart them around every week of the year, those bulky monitors are easier to cart around and less expensive if they need to be replaced.

I understand why they have monitors, but it always seems silly. They are facing the action from ten feet away and they're staring at a TV that's smaller than my iPad. It's not like they're in a press box or the WCW guys 75 feet away facing the other direction

I don't buy the idea that its more practical or durable. You guys ever seen pics of HHH or Vince at Gorilla position? They're not staring into big boxy monitors, flat screens all the way. They cart those everywhere too.

Also they're built like literal tanks, they could be thrown across the arena and they'd still work perfectly fine.

It's because those kinds of monitors have less delay than HD monitors and make it so the commentators are able to call the action as it happens live.
And for those who ask "why use monitors when they can see the action right in front of them?" It's because the commentators are supposed to commentate what's on TV, not what's in the arena. So if something happens in the arena off camera that's supposed to be a surprise for when the camera changes angles, they can't spoil it.

Cheaper and look cooler hitting someone then a flat screen. They do lots of damage when plugged in. Just ask Dean Ambrose

So let me get this straight. They carry around and maintain a huge HD titantron set, lighting rigs, cameras, a ring, etc...but the monitors would just be too much?

All the announce table spots they've been doing since creation, they cant live without them for some reason and the visual of wrestlers tossing those big monitors around is Attitude Era all the way.

Pretty much, the strange part is though after 7 years of HD they are still looking at 4:3 monitors.

It's definitely the delay, analogue monitors like that give an actual live feed of the action whereas the HD flat panels would have a minor delay

To be used as weapons. Hitting someone with a flat tablet doesn't look as impressive as hitting someone with a bulky monitor.

The problem is what's on the monitor, not the monitor itself.
