I just started watching Raw/Nitro in '95 and I'm really surprised how Mongo is much better than I remember him being. For a non-wrestling guy, he seems pretty aware of the product, seems enthusiastic about it, and has some pretty good interplay with the Brain. Despite shilling "where the big boys play" every 3 seconds, I think Bischoff does a great job setting the tone for the show. Bobby is Bobby, not as great as with Gorilla, but still Bobby.
Then, I watch Raw and it's pretty awful. Why are people always picking on Mongo and not saying anything about Vince's annoying habit of predicting the end of the match on every pinfall and counting to 3 before the referee's hand has hit the mat for the second time? Then there's all the homoerotic squeals of pleasure when Shawn is stripping while Lawler runs through a list of one liners he probably got out of a joke book written for 4th graders. Horrible.

Imagine my great relief when Austin gave Vince his first Stunner which meant JR had to call thw rest of the show. That more than made up for SCSA being a dick to Bret.

I hated Vince's commentary on Raw. Every time they had a taped show he'd shoe-horn in references to things that happened over the weekend in an attempt to make the show seem live.
Something like: - "What a maneuver! Say Randy, did you see Dennis Franz win best dramatic actor at the Emmy's last night? HA HA HA." - "Oooh, yeah I di-iid. NYPD Blue, dig it!" - "1, 2, HE GOT HIM!!! Wait, no, no he didn't."

Vince was just horrible on commentary, just cringeworthy. I wanted a 1997 RAW last night where he in ring interviews Shawn Michaels who begs him to let him be apart of Summerslam, Vince just looks so cheesy and uncomfortable to the Vince he would become.

Vince really play off well with Ventura. Brash heel to his goody, goody face announcer. "SHUT UP, MCMAHON!!"
Lawler had his moments but Jerry was at his best when he was with JR or he was railing on Bret.

I have to agree Jesse and Vince worked the best. Heenan always seemed like he couldn't be bothered when working with Vince. Much like his WCW work. And by the time he worked with Lawler he had been around long emough to become Michael Cole annoying. At least with Jesse in the mid 80's he was t as played out. They deffo gelled the best

Vince was also pretty good as an understated solo announcer or with other faces back in the 70's and early half of the 80's. But, it seemed like in the 90's he was either trying to fill the shoes of Gorilla Monsoon or he got the idea that he was a larger than life personality just like his superstars. I know in the 70's and early 80's he didn't do the thing where he switched back and forth between growling and high pitched forced enthusiasm.

I agree that Vince worked with Jesse the best as their personalities complimented each other the best with Vince's dorky face persona being a perfect punching bag for Jesse. Vince has kind of grown on me a bit over the years as a commentator as even though he's clearly doesn't know most of the moves which is a big part of being a play by play commentator, I feel like he did a good job putting over the characters and he was so over the top and goofy that it's hard for me not to be entertained listening to him. He definitely did have his annoying quirks though. All of the well known ones have been pointed out (ONE TWO THREE HE's GOT HIM, WHAT A MANUEVER, BACK BODY DROP), but one that would always annoy was the fact that when he would be calling the match he would never just refer to a wrestler by just their first name or their last name or their nickmame, but he had to say their entire name every time he would mention them even in passing. For example when calling a match with say Bret Hart he would never just say Bret or Hart or Hitman but everytime he would be like "WHAT A MANUEVER by BRET THE HITMAN HART!" or "BRET THE HITMAN HART is having his problems here". Like you don't have to say all three dude, just say one and save you're breath.
I will say though that the three man commentary of him, Piper, and Savage for Superstars in 1991 is one of the worst commentating teams I've ever heard. Having three commentators that are all faces (Savage would act kind of like a tweener sometimes but was mainly face), are all loud over the top characters that just shout all the time without ever saying anything insightful, and are all lacking knowledge (other then Piper somewhat) on what any of the moves are called was just a recipe for a disasters. The only two teams I would say are worse are the god awful trio of Bruce Prichard, Mike McGuirk, and Pete Daugherty that did a lot of house show cards in 1987 and the trio of Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and the super annoying Matt Striker that somehow were the PPV team for over a year despite the fact that they sucked and Cole and Lawler clearly couldn't stand Striker. I just don't like three man commentator teams as it just leads to guys talking over each other a bunch without saying anything insightful. A face play by play man and heel color commentator as always been the best combo and I never understand why they always try to get away from it.

I remember one show where Vince used the word "absurd" in retaliation to almost all of Bobby's comments. "Don't be absurd, Bobby Heenan." "Bobby Heenan, that's absurd." It was like he learned a new word. Then, he seemed to forget it before the next show because I don't remember him using it again. Gorilla had a bullyish attitude toward Bobby. It really came out more on Prime Time. Vince never tried to carry that off. Tony Schiavone tried to do the Gorilla thing by bossing Bobby around, telling him to be quiet, sit down, stand up, settle down, knock it off, but it didn't really work.

As an aside, IMHO, certain combos worked well- Piper, Heenan, Monsoon worked due to Monsoon being the level straight man while Piper & Heenan lay into/trolling each other(really it was a race to see who can piss off the other faster), but they each brought their brand of knowledge.
Vince & Bobby was seeing if Heenan can say some outrageous shit, like: Heenan: Can I ask a question? Monsoon: You want to leave? Heenan: No, now Rev. Slick you do services for the departed, right? Slick: Yes, many times. Heenan: How hard is it to pull the gold out of their mouths-- Vince: WHAT?!?!

The first time I can remember ever getting annoyed at commentary was during Wrestlemania 10. Vince pointed out the "capacity crowd" every five minutes it seemed.

I too liked Vince when he was paired with Jesse but hated his 90s commentary. I was watching a Tatanka match or something the other day and heard Johnny Polo's commentary for the first time. I don't know if he was having an off day but it was the worst I've ever heard. His jokes make modern Lawler seem like Louis CK.
