and now to re-try in the proper section...
I'm watching Superbrawl III right now and it's a tag match between Pillman & Austin vs. Bagwell & Watts, and the crowd are dumping all over Erik Watts. This isn't surprising now because if I recall correctly he was the promoter's son getting pushed while green as hell, but it's interesting to see this kind of reaction happening even the days where kayfabe was (relatively) stronger than it is now.
Other more obvious examples would be THE WARRIORRRRRRGHHH at Halloween Havoc in his Gassed Man Standing match against Hogan, and Rocky Maivia.
So basically babyfaces getting rejected by the crowd. What are some other examples of this? I'd prefer pre-Cena examples but I'm cool with post-Cena ones too (i.e. the BIG DAWG at the Rumble this year and so on)

The crowd turned on Renegade shortly after he debuted. I remember the crowd chanting for Orndorff at Bash at the Beach '95 and then maybe the biggest pop of the night when Orndorff hit him with his piledriver.

A lot of promoter's kids have gotten booed over the years. I've heard stories that even in the 70s, in a kayfabe heavy territory like Memphis where numerous fans bought wrestling as real hook, line, and sinker people would still give George Gulas negative reactions because he sucked that much.

The fact you have to call it "the Cena treatment" is incredibly disheartening.

I thought this thread would be about a wrestler being pushed down our throats for 15 years straight and was about to say Hogan.

When Ricky Steamboat and Lex Luger feuded in 89, and Luger was the heel, Steamboat got booed in a lot of places. The family man stuff with his kid and Bonnie didn't get over as well as George Scott had hoped. But neither did JYD-Dick Murdoch in 89.

Remember Hogan got alot of it when he first game to WCW. He caught hell from fans right after his long hiatus in WWF and it intensified when he beat Yokozuna for the world title. Hogan had his haters but when he got pinned by Yoko in the rematch, almost the whole crowd cheered.

Steamboat's theme was sucktastic by late 80's standard.

Hogan had his haters but when he got pinned by Yoko in the rematch, almost the whole crowd cheered. The place where I really saw it starting was against Undertaker in late '91. You could just tell that the crowd was more split that they had ever been, and when they created an "impromptu" PPV just so that Hogan could get the belt back for the 4th time, it didn't help. Then there was the fact that Sid Justice was much more over as a babyface than Hogan, yet Vince had Hogan screw him out of the Rumble victory. Brainless booking. I liked what WCW did in '95 with bringing Hogan out in the black. People had been booing him and they didn't know what to do about it, so they just attributed it to his outfit being confusing to his Hulkamaniacs.

Remember Hogan got alot of it when he first game to WCW. Yeah, the WCW crowd did not want anything to do with Hogan. Probably a dual of people tired of him from his WWF run and the more traditional Wrestling fans disliking Hogan's theatrics

I especially hated that he went over folks like Vader and Flair & Sting made into his sidekick.

I thought this thread would be about a wrestler being pushed down our throats for 15 years straight and was about to say Hogan. Word. JBL was pushed down are throats when WWE's bookers took the strap off Eddie Guerrero (who was insanely over) and had JBL hang onto it for a while. Thankfully, that while did not go on and on and on as long as Cena's career at the top.

Shawn Michaels: Male Stripper as top face got a lot of negative reactions. I was one of the ones who booed HBK during his face push, but unlike Cena, my reaction had nothing to do with match quality. Y'see, Michaels was so convincing during his heel run in the early to mid 90s that I became accustomed to loving to hate him. I didn't feel he properly redeemed himself to get the applause that faces are supposed to get, so I continued to boo him - even though I continued to enjoy his matches. I don't think any wrestler got me to hate him for heel mannerisms and behaviour as much as HBK.

I have come to respect Shawn, but HBK from '95-'98 still makes my skin crawl for just being so douchey and obnoxious. Making him into a babyface just made him more disgusting to me.

Shawn Michaels: Male Stripper as top face got a lot of negative reactions. Even Sid was more over of a babyface. This is more of a time and perhaps the crowd, but when Trish Stratus was booed at Wrestlemania 22 and they went wild for Mickie James was pretty great.

I was going to mention Hogan in the 1992 Royal Rumble. Hogan is eliminated. Clean. Just like in 1989 and like in 89 he comes then screws the person who eliminated him. The fans quite rghtly boo Hogan and cheer on Sid. It honestly looked like a heel turn, but even if it hadn't people were bored of Hogan. The fact they had to edit the crowd post-production to make them appear pro-Hogan and anti-Sid in rebroadcasts says it all.

It probably was more the Chicago crowd but to be honest, Mickie James was so GREAT in her psycho character that I wasn't really surprised that she got this over. Usually, that kind of angle isn't well-received by the audience but both Trish & Mickie knocked it out of the park for that angle.
