I can see azzarello keeping Millar in check azzarello is a good writer and I bet DC gave him full control over Millar's story. If Jack Kirby and William Shakespeare were resurrected from their graves and made co-writers of Dark Knight 3, they still couldn't keep Miller in check or make whatever story he came up with into something coherent, let alone "good". Just remember, the reason WCW brought Eric Bischoff back in 2000 was to keep Vince Russo "in check". We wound up with David Arquette as WCW World Champion.

All Star Batman & Robin might be the most (un?)intentionally hilarious comics I've ever read. Like it's so overwhelmingly edgelord it reads like a parody and part of me thinks it is one. Then again, it's Frank Miller and he likely wrote ASB&R intending it to be completely serious and -profound-.
And speaking of good Batman comics, I really enjoyed Jeph Loeb's stuff like The Long Halloween, Hush, and Dark Victory. It almost makes you forget how awful his work in Marvel's Ultimate universe was. No Man's Land was fantastic, too.

Isn't it generally accepted that Loeb kinda went off the rails after his son passed away, and nobody in the industry has the heart to call him on it?

Unfortunately, yeah. I don't think it's any coincidence that his work after his son's death was the worst in his career. But I don't think there's any good way to say to a guy "Your comics have sucked since your son died from cancer." Especially since unlike Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb comes off as a genuinely likable person.

Barely on topic but I wanna ask, I've been trying to get into Batman comics and I'm having a hell of a time trying to actually find anything good. Arkham Asylum: Serious place on serious earth was unenjoyable, Long Halloween is pretty good but the ending is really bad. I liked the Killing Joke and Death of the family however. Would anyone have any they'd recommend? I've been trying to read the most popular issues and so far two of the (apparent) best are kinda underwhelming. Haunted Knight - Three one-shot stories by Loeb & Sale, done before Long Halloween. Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo Vol. 1-2 - Collecting almost all the Haney & Aparo Brave and the Bold team-up issues. Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle - The beginning of the Grant & Breyfogle run. Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams Vol. 1-3

If it helps, Azzarello is writing. Off a plot by Miller, but it should be reigned in enough for the liking of anyone sane who wants to read. And really, I don't get why people would be outraged. It's its own miniseries event in his own crazy world that isn't connected to any other Batbooks. Ignore away and miss nothing. If it was being announced as Snyder & Capullo's replacement, then yeah outrage is warranted. Because It's DC, ANYTHING they do sends this board into a hate mob. If it was Marvel then everyone would be using the "Stand Alone defense" Well, while we're on the subject I think Marvel's also run by morons. Albeit ones still much smarter than those at DC. And I say that when DC heroes are waaaay more the ones I actually care about.

Jeph Loeb does alright work when he's paired with Tim Sale, otherwise, not so much.

Don't get me wrong Frank Miller is a crazy person who hasn't wrote anything good in years but I really hate the revoinist history that some people spout about him never being any good.
You can still see the influence of Miller's classic work all over pop culture today.
Both Burton and Nolan borrowed heavily from his work for their Batman movies (Nolan especially). Zack Snyder is pretty much cribbing TDKR for his new movie.
That awesome Netflix Daredevil series that everyone loves is almost a direct adaption of Miller's work.
Hell even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wouldn't exist with out Miller's Daredevil.
All that being said Miller is a crazy old racist now who's health is failing. Unless Brian Azzerello pulls off a miracle this book is going to be a train wreck.
Also you can see the outline of Superman's dick In that cover.

Why people praise the dickens out of Guardians is beyond me.

But I've made my feelings on the movie quite clear at this point. and I only came into this thread to post this here since I posted it in the comics thread...

The revisionist history, that is. Not the super-schlong. Something tells me Miller's only there now because his name still kinda means something, even if he is long past his best. He's co-writing this, and the art is by someone else (not the first time he's done stories in this universe and had them drawn by other people though - All-Star Batman & Robin is supposed to be in this continuity, too).

I usually just point out that in most of his good stuff you can see at least hints of all the crap he gets called out on now.

Busiek mentioned on Twitter how for good or ill, that's the idea of Superman that Frank wants to put across.
Thought it was a good point; on that level, I guess Miller succeeded.

New wraparound cover variant by Miller: I suppose "Weird squatting Batman" is better than that Superman thing.
