Horrible name, even if the name doesn't matter.

Remember Big Wolf on Campus? Yeah; one of the leads won a serious chunk of change on The Price is Right.

That's a really terrible name. And what happened to being contractually obligated to keep the 'family' part of it?

Can Disney use it to show old Disney Shows? I mean they have a nice back catalogue that they never touch.

With the "Pat Robertson forced the 'Family' name...", I thought the reason it was Family so long was more because cable companies were going to take the show off if they didn't have "Family"...would that be more of the reason?

They should drop the 700 Club. It's always been ridiculous that Disney is contractually obligated to show a TV programme where the host has advised men to beat their wives among countless other bullshit Pat Robertson has come out with.

This popped up recently on VintageToledoTV: I sure loved watching that channel when it launched and I was about to start sixth grade. The Basement, 3 Friends and Jerry, Camp Candy, Walter Melon, Bad Dog. They showed this 30min launch promo a lot when they did launch and I have always hoped to some day see it again. A lot of nostalgia from the Fox Family launch, and now it's extinct by 2 channels.

I assume they're calling it Freeform just so they can air episodes of Law And Order. Since that's what every network does now.

I still remember the sign off to the transtion to Fox Family that ended with Gale Evens and Roy Rogers singing Happy Trails. Then POW Mr Bill.

It makes it sound like an FM rock station from decades ago.

It makes it sound like an FM rock station from decades ago. A decade? Well that's pushing it....oh wait, there actually WERE channels with such names in 2005! How dare I forget the Jack/Free/revolving 102.7 door crisis in NYC?

Do people really give a shit what a channel is called anymore? I just watch what I like on whatever channel it comes on. I didn't think people, especially these young people they are targeting, still sat in front of the TV mindlessly watching whatever was on these days. For example, I have no idea what El Rey shows aside from Lucha Underground, or what AMC shows aside from Walking Dead. A majority do and/or should if they have awareness. Don't mistake not-paying-attention habits as status quo. (It's just a pet peeve when I see stuff like that. Like "not knowing basic stuff" is supposed to be the norm. I'm ok with people not knowing. It's just a pet peeve for people to think that's normal and then to be abrasive in their ignorance about stuff like that's the way it is supposed to be. (("Ignorance" meaning "not knowing." Not in the insult context.))

Not in the insult context.)) I'm not at all saying that the way I feel is how most should think. I just figured that this day in age where people don't always necessarily watch tv shows on a TV network, that such things didn't really matter anymore, especially to young people who are supposedly the reason for the name change. Like I know people that love certain TV shows, but I don't think I've heard anyone in the last several years talk about loving a certain channel, since it doesn't really matter these days. You can watch a show on DVD, Netflix, Hulu, etc. or just DVR new episodes of a certain show without really knowing what channel it's on. It seems irrelevant to me in the modern age. For example, I loved Community. When it switched to a web show it didn't matter, I still watched it. When Scrubs changed networks, I still watched it. The channel didn't matter to me. Or whether Raw was on USA or Spike. Likewise, when Sci-Fi became SyFy it had no bearing on whether or not I watched it. I was watching WWECW both before and after the name change, as well as those crappy original movies they do. The name of the channel didn't affect my enjoyment or lack thereof of these things. Maybe I'm way off though. Maybe people actually still have loyalty to a TV network for whatever reason, or the name of a channel matters to them for some reason. If this is true, can someone sincerely explain why?

And that press release called the potential audience "becomers". Is that the new name for Millenials? (obligatory "Darn Becomers" line here)

Wonder what kind of deal they got Pat Robertson to agree to? He was adamant for years of forcing them to keep "family" in the name, so there has to be something more than just agreeing to let 700 Club stay on. Basically when Disney Originally purchased the Family Channel, one of the negotiations was that the 700 Club would be guaranteed a slot on the schedule, and that Disney could not veto any of the content discussed in the show. Actually the sale went through Fox originally, as the reports seem to say, so Robertson's deal to keep his show alive was with them. ABC and Disney jumped into the mix a few years after, and now I think Fox is no longer part of the channel - 700 Club has existed they every name change and back room power exchange since.

From what I can tell, Freeform was chosen as the name because it sounds like a name for a social media platform, which is popular among young adults. Its still stupid though, because this a network they're trying to run. I have a feeling that name will be changed at some point soon.

Every network? It's just USA and TNT, that's it.

When Robertson first sold the channel in the late 90's it was to Fox and Saban. That ended up being a disaster for Fox, so they completely sold it to Disney, and in their first few years it also was a disaster. That channel has had a strange history.

And WGN America. And WE TV…Sundance TV. Ion. Cloo, Bravo, Oxygen and MyNetwork. My local channel WLNY. Oh and NBC still airs the new SVU episodes.

Discovery America would air Law and Order if there was a new Law and Order: BBQ Pit Judge version.
