He stopped performing. His team stopped winning. Was Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill and Patrick Ewing suppose to be the Miami Heat Big 3 before a Big 3 was cool? Honorable mention goes to:

Peyton Manning this season. He's still having a decent season but he's lost a lot off of his heater and looks old and ineffective out there versus his career and talent.

Peyton Manning this season. He's still having a decent season but he's lost a lot off of his heater and looks old and ineffective out there versus his career and talent. The St Louis game started it, starting with that game in the regular season he's thrown 16 touchdowns and 13 picks. And 7 of those touchdowns came in 2 games. That's the game that I think started it, and when he retires we'll look back at and say that was the end for Peyton as Peyton.

Probably will get some heat for this, but I think Martin Broduer should've retired 2 years before he finally did last season.

Darrell Waltrip. Went 7 years without winning races, eventually started missing so many NASCAR had to put in the past champion's provisional for him to make it into the field. I think in like 1997 he ended up using that like 20 times in the 32 race season

Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan. For proof just google the Hulkamania Tour or if you hate yourself, watch some TNA episodes from their time
For more typical sports? Willie Mays was just pathetic. Wizards Jordan should get retconned from history.
I'll add Ali's name as a contender for the "Hanging around too long" title. Those last fights man... They are uncomfortable to even watch.

He never was close to ever winning in that period.

Willie Mays...end of story Had a 0 WAR in his last year...and was made an all-star. So really, Cal Ripken got the Willie Mays treatment.

Wizards Jordan should get retconned from history. He still averaged 20 points a game in his last season as a 39 year old.

I think the one season he was remotely competitive after say, 1994, was 1998, which was when his own team finally dried up and he was in DEI equipment for half of the season. If anything he (and others like the Bodines) were probably kicking themselves for sticking it out as owner-drivers for so long. I think Ricky Rudd and Tony Stewart are the only people not named Alan Kulwicki that have been reasonably successful as owner-drivers, and even Stewart only half-counts as one.

I'm sure they where because once they went that way it was down hill for most of the people who try to be both. Just not a good odds when to full owners/Drivers had success. Tony did well but as you said he was only half owner.

I think in like 1997 he ended up using that like 20 times in the 32 race season A lot of that was also down to Darrell trying to run his own team on a shoestring budget as well. He had some decent runs when he substituted for Steve Park in 1998 and very nearly won at Pocono. On a similar Nascar note I'll suggest Richard Petty. Won his last race in 1984 and stayed around for eight years afterwards, yes there were some decent runs here and there but it was a pale shadow of the man who dominated for so long in the sixties and seventies.

Several losses per season had become the norm in the twilight of Bobby Bowden's career, and this was at a time when the ACC really wasn't very good.
