If you live in NYC or Chicago or LA and you're a Yankees/Mets, Rangers/Islanders, Jets/Giants, Knicks/Nets, Cubs/White Sox or Lakers/Clippers fan, how do you feel about the other team in your town?
I didn't ask about EPL because obviously if you're a fan of one London or Manchester or Liverpool team, you hate the others.
I guess it's different when it comes to the NBA and NHL because these teams play in the same division, but what about Yankees and White Sox fans right now?
Do you take any civic pride from the Mets and Cubs in the playoffs or are you rooting against them?
Same with Jets/Giants fans. Would you cheer for the other team in the playoffs if yours wasn't in it?

I'll root for the other team in the playoffs if they're not division rivals. So yes to Mets/Giants, but no to Islanders/Nets.

I'm not huge into baseball, but my entire family is Cubs fans, so I root for them by default. When the Sox won, I was happy for them, but I'm in the minority. There was somebody (sounded like an intern) on the rock radio station today that had to do a story about the Cubs and he's a die hard Sox fan and he said that he hated every minute of having to cover the Cubs.

I can't and will not root for the Anaheim Ducks. I wish their entire franchise nothing but on-ice misfortunes and revel in their failures. I'm not a huge baseball fan anymore(I just lost interest in the game), but I still casually root for the Angels and absolutely detest the Dodgers. As far, as Lakers/Clippers go, I couldn't care less. I'm not a NBA basketball fan.

I always though it was geographically based, for example South Chicago are Sox fans, North Chicago are Cubs fans or If you live in the Bronx you like the Giants or if you are in Queens you like the Jets.

Is that where each team played out of before sharing what is now Metlife Stadium? I know The Jets played at the old polo grounds, but I'm not from New York, so I didn't know where that is (well, I knew it was in Flushing. I just didn't know Flushing was in Queens). I learned during the 2007 ALCS that the Braves were in Boston (it was brought up since the ALCS was between the Red Sox and the Indians and the Indians beat the Boston Braves in the 1948 World Series) before they moved to Milwaukee and eventually Atlanta. Which got me thinking, I wonder what would happen if The Braves stayed in Boston. Would they ever win the battle for the hearts and minds with the Red Sox. Especially if they won the World Series during the Red Sox' 86 year drought (which they did as the Milwaukee Braves in 1957). Since you know, everyone loves a winner.

That's the Yankees and Mets, you're thinking of. The Giants and Jets play in the same stadium in New Jersey. Jets fans are insufferable, so that makes the decision easy. The Mets are traditionally worse than the Yankees, so its fun to watch them play in the playoffs.

It depends on the sport and the team.
The Mets team is easy to root for, so I'm hoping they do well as a Yankees fan. The Jets while Rex Ryan was coach was unbearable, but I like Todd Bowles so I regained my respect for them.
The Nets are not only a division "rival" to the Knicks, but they pretty much paraded for years on end that my home state wasn't good enough for them. So f*** the Nets. And while they technically play in different cities (and states), the Rangers and Islanders are in the same metro area, and division, as my Devils. While I have no beef with the Isles except when they play, the Rangers are my team's chief rival.

It might've been while the morning guys were on a couple days ago and they brought an intern on for a couple minutes. Edit: Just googled Kevin Kellam ... that's probably who it was.

The Football Giants used to play in Old Yankee Stadium while the Jets played in Shea, so that's why some might guess the fans location.

The Giants played in Shea for a year, too. They mostly played in the Polo Grounds (where the Baseball Giants played before moving to San Francisco) until the mid-50's. Then they played in Yankee Stadium for about 18 years before going to Shea for a year, then the Meadowlands in the 70's.
Funnily enough, the Jets (as the Titans) originally started playing in the Polo Grounds when the AFL first formed. They moved to Shea a few years later. They followed the "big brother" franchise to the Meadowlands in the 80's.

For the record I hate the White Sox. Any true White Sox fan hates the Cubs. As a Cubs fan, I think the rivalry is much more one sided. Most true Cubs fans don't like the Sox at all, but let's face the facts, our real rivals are the Cardinals. The White Sox fans hate the Cubs so much, and are so obsessed that Mc Nally's was giving out free shots every time the Cards got a hit in the NLDS. You really think the Cubby Bear, Murphy's or any Cubs bar would do the same if roles were reversed? To me, it's actually laughable how much much they hate the Cubs, possibly more than they like their own team. Every time a Sox fan says, "I hate the Cubs", I say what do you think of your team? They groan and then I say you are more obsessed with the Cubs than your own team and laugh.

As a Bay Area native, I detest the Oakland Football Team. (I grew up in Oakland the time they were in LA) There is no like between Niners and Oakland Football Team fans. Both have their enclaves of idiocy and ignorance.
I haven't watched baseball in 20+ years regularly, but I can say that the A's-Giants rivalry is more about the Giants preventing the A's from moving to San Jose than actual baseball.

Not to go on a tangent, but it always amazes me how popular fiction depicts these multi-team situations where there's a "cool" team and a team that only weirdos and losers will enjoy. For example, in New York fiction, the cool teams are the Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, and Giants, while the loser teams are the Mets, Islanders, Devils, Jets, and Nets.

I guess because I don't live in one of these cities so I couldn't understand it and that is true. I don't understand how you can hate one team and love another even if they are both the same city. I mean if The Mets and the Yankees played each other in a World Series for example I likely be happy regardless who wins because at the NY it's still a championship in NY. Maybe someone could try and explain hating lets say the Cubs and love the White Sox or whatever. I can see in your example why a NYer would hate the Devils because they are NJ.

They followed the "big brother" franchise to the Meadowlands in the 80's. I should add because the Giants didn't want to play at Shea while Yankee Stadium was temporarily closed for renovations, they spent two years at the Yale Bowl. They only won once. The Giants didn't mind the Jets moving in since Wellington Mara and Leon Hess were friends. By that metric I've believed there's been much of a Giants-Jets rivalry. I used to feel the same way about Knicks-Nets until the Nets moved to Brooklyn and tried everything to steal Knick fans. It hasn't worked, imo.

The Football Giants used to play in Old Yankee Stadium while the Jets played in Shea, so that's why some might guess the fans location. I just said the Jets were from Queens since jets are airplanes and airplanes usually live at airports. A nickname for Queens is the borough of airports. Also I could have sworn they played at Shea until the late 80s, but according to Wikipedia 83 was their last year. I also should add, that I am by no means a NYC expert.
