I know I'm a year late pretty much, but I just now got Soul Calibur III and I'm noticing it to be significantly harder than the last two, as in sometimes I can't even get past destined battles or just certain opponents at all, I think thus far I've beaten Tale of Souls like..one time. My copy came with no manual.
Is there some new thing I'm missing here or do I just need more practice?

Is soul caliber basically like the Mortal Kombat games?

Yeah, I played SC 3 and it was frustrating.
And no, it is not like the MK games, although I wish I could perform a fatality or 2 on some the more annoying fighters.

Is soul caliber basically like the Mortal Kombat games? If you haven't played Soul Caliber before, don't bother.

Yes, in that it's a game where you fight.
No on all other accounts.
Although recent MK's have tried to implement SC's "fighting with swords and crap" thing it has going.

Ever though I bought the game a year ago, I'm in the same boat as you.

Talim, my best character in SCII got downgraded in SCIII!
Also.....the thing that confuses me, is you can only put the Quick Game game types on the Easy setting. Everything else is Normal or above(Normal, they can kick your ass mid way through Tale of Souls, Hard.....let's just say, only the world champs of Soul Calibur can beat that difficulty.....>_>). I have fun, until I get to the part where they get so hard that you CAN'T block! Seriously! The first move they try to hit you with is a move that knocks you in the air.....once they knock you in the air, your ass is grass, as they will keep knocking you into the air over and over! That, or they fight with the Italian style(i.e. they block everything you do, and as soon as they see an opening, they hit you with a high damage combo).

Why though? I never understood why it is considered so great Fighting games with depth are good. Fighting games with interesting characters are good. Fighting games with dial-a-combos are bad. Anyway, SC3 was nowhere near as good as 1 or 2. What's probably making it seem so difficult is they changed the normal movesets so much. Why the hell they decided to not release this in arcades first is beyond me...that's what you DO with fighting games. That's how you know what to fix.

So far I've only beat Tale of Souls with Maxi and Siegfried. That's just sad.
I am getting the hang of it though, I think I was just out of practice and buttonmashing.

I haven't played in a while, but I remember Setsuka (sp?) being tough as hell to beat.
Not Ninja Gaiden frustrating, mind you, but still pretty tough.
