To me this film looks like Josie and the Pussycats, without the humour, satire and some quality of songs. I think that's the bummer? Because Josie and The Pussycats was so good. I want to say it's criminally overlooked but more and more I'm reading people talk it up so I think it's starting to get more attention and appreciation.

I love Josie and the Pussycats. I think it's a very clever and witty film. Hell they even got a good performance out of Tara Reid!

When it first came out, I don't think a lot of critics truly got it. It was both a loving tribute and an elaborate roasting of all the commercial teen pop tropes that were big in the late 90's/early 2000's, and at the same time the movie had sort of a bouncy and bubbly tone that stayed true to the original concept. The filmmakers realized their source material was ludicrous, so they made their adaption even more so. Whereas it looks like the makers of this Jem flick took a bizarre musical fantasy and scrubbed it down into a Saturday night ABC Family original movie.

Good (sorta) news for Jem & The Holograms.... According to Rotten Tomatoes, it isn't the worst film coming out as Rock The Kasbah (10%), The Last Witch Hunter (17%), and Paranormal Activity (20%) have worse ratings than it (26%) Wow. If you just saw the commercials, you really would believe this is the best film & performance of Bill Murray's career.

Even as a kid watching Inhumanoids, I would wonder, "how are they getting away with this shit?"
I'm sure a movie now would have Tom Hardy as Metlar

If anything, the Jem movie is basically playing straight what Josie & the Pussycats parodied back in 2000.

One star on Rotten Tomatoes. So just barely above Leprechaun Origins.

Well I got 4hrs off work yesterday and managed to fit in both this and PA 6, closing out Blumhouse 2015. Both are on the lower end of the mid-tier, and I'm honestly not sure what to make of it.
We're all aware that it's not a paint-by-numbers Marvel Studios type 'respectful' and 'faithful' vision of the animated series brought to life.
I was hoping for Step Up 3.5, and while there are elements of that (particularly Chu's constant use of multimedia clips that recall the testimonial videos from Step Up 3, the opening/closing of these two movies are incredibly similar and there are lots of aesthetic consistences) it's not that movie.
Parts of it play like Jon Chu's The Hunger Games/Divergent Trilogy A Blumhouse Production.
Parts of it play like Earth to Echo.
Structurally it's like you took Josie and The Pussycats or 2Ge+her, stripped them down to their skeleton and then severed the skull losing both mind and voice in the process.
It's a big ol fascinating mess.
And far too long, at the 2hr mark it's at least 40 minutes longer than it has any business being.
And I think the world's better for it being this way.
Also it's pretty hilarious how blatantly Jem's dad favors her over Kimber. There's a really baffling scene that makes that uncomfortably clear if you unpack it.
Ryan Guzman remains an attractive gentleman.

If nothing else, I'm glad my contribution to this thread is bringing Inhumanoids discussion to the forefront.
Bad adaptations of 80s cartoons NEVER Metlar and company FOREVER

My review, though some spoilers, but mostly spoiler free.
Okay finally saw the movie, well first of all I have to say it is not good, but the first trailer made it look worse than it was. There was some reference and elements in the cartoon than that trailer would have you believe.
It was very cheaply made, it can't make up its mind if it is a documentary or a movie, with all those YT clips.
I liked the cameos from people that worked in the cartoon, and some lines from the cartoon, they even said "little miss pink hair and the sing a longs", and that wasn't a catch phrase they only used that once in the cartoon.
It was very predictable and all, it was very generic.
I thought the climax with them breaking into Erica's office was something I could see in the old cartoon, though when I was watching it, I was thinking "if only they had a super computer that can project holograms".
The songs weren't that great, my favorite is the Jem goes solo ballet, I am a sucker for sad ballets so what can I say.
One more thing at the end, Zipper turns good? What come on, in the old cartoon he was more evil than Eric and the Misfits, he would try to kill people, while with the Misfits cause and effect and not thinking things through in some of their actions could kill people, Zipper he tried to murder people, he was tied someone to a volcano and when it erupted, he said "must be my lucky dad", so yeah not cool with that, though if by some miracle there is a sequel, I am sure he will be back on Erica and Misfits side.
And yes the Misfits appear at the very end, I thought there reveal they remind me more of another Hasbro evil girl band the Dazzlings, but still I thought they were on point, I liked that Pizzazz has some history with Rio, in the old cartoon she wanted Rio in the early episodes, in the comics it is hinted they had history, I hope that doesn't become the only part of her character, one thing I hated about season 3, was Pizzazz digression of a character, when she became obcessed Riot and that is all she cared for, please don't do that.
Well it doesn't matter, there is not going to be a sequel, the Misfits they are going to be the way of Azula in the Last Airbender live action canon.
So while not as bad as the trailer made it out to be, still not good, I did enjoy the breaking into Starlight climax, that had the spirit of the old cartoon, and some of the songs weren't terrible. Though still take anything Daniel Ingram does on My Little Pony or Equestria Girls movies over this. Well back to reading the Jem comics, a 21st century Jem adaption that is actually good.

Don't you hate it when movies outright tease a sequel, but end up bombing so bad, that said tease just ends up being left hanging?
