Rifftrax is Mike, Bill, and Kevin's baby. It's very similar to MST3k, but it isn't MST3k. Joel also isn't involved.

I honestly hope that Rifftrax doesn't get forgotten in all this. I subscribe to a lot of MST3K fangroups, and all they're talking about is the relaunch, and Rifftrax has a show coming up in a few weeks. Haven't really seen a lot of talk about them unless it's on the issue of MST3K. I'm hoping people don't forget about the Holiday show. I don't think they will, but I don't want to see any animosity come out of this. It's actually a great time to love riffing. Rifftrax is going strong, the relaunch is happening, Trace and Frank are on the road doing special riff shows, Incognito Cinema Warriors XP is taping new material...it's great to see everyone getting business right now.

Me too. Also, because...well, comparing CT and RT...and I mean this in the nicest way possible, but...CT seems to play it safe in the model of Joel-era MST3K, riffing the B-movies from the '70s and back. While RT (and really, the Mike era of MST) thought outside the box a bit more often.

Having finally watched the video with her intro, I am in love with Kinga Forrester.

I think with MST3K it was more getting more comfortable with a wider variety of films then then the Joel to Mike switch. Because other than Joel leaving the writers room was the same, and Mike was a writer (head writer in name) since KTMA.

Joel says that he'll share more about the $3.3M challenge, including the KTMA episode reward, in "another update this week."

The only main cast member still in question is the mad assistant, I believe. I doubt we'll get many, if any, movies from the mid-80s through current times. Joel's stated before he wants to go a bit obscure, and given the choices we saw him and his crew pick in the early half of MST3K and in Cinematic Titanic, we'll likely see a good bit of 50s-70s material. Most of those have cheaper licensing too, so that helps. We'll see. Once this is up and running, I would love to see him strike a deal with Something Weird Video at some point, maybe for season 12 or something. Even excusing all of their unusable softcore stuff, they still have a massive library of material that would make perfect MST fodder. The Mighty Gorga, Godmonster of Indian Flats, Sting of Death (giant jellyfish-man!), tons of educational shorts...oh well. Good point, with a few exceptions, they didnt get into 80s-90s material until the Mike years.

If I'm not mistaken, almost all - if not all - of the 1980s films they did while Joel was there all part of the Film Ventures package they licensed (the ones with the weird credits sequences taken from other movies). That of course doesn't include the KTMA year - they had no choice on what films they could do then, they only had what was in KTMA's library to pick from.

I can't imagine people forgetting Rifftrax in all of this; I think it's more a simple matter of the granddaddy of them all announcing its comeback, so of course people want to speak on that the most. It's something people have been wondering about for literally over 15 years now, so to see it happen is really amazing. I'm sure the Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny show will do great business, plus Joel has been pretty vocal about supporting Rifftrax and basically all riff-based material that's going strong on the net these days. You can tell that the last thing Joel wants is any business-related animosity.

Plus the recent addition of MST3K episodes on Rifftrax means that the money from those episodes goes to people who weren't getting money outside of the MST3k principles (Jim, Joel, and Kevin if I'm not mistaken). The fact Kevin has been so quiet about his role in any upcoming mst3k thing or this kickstarter is interesting.

Kickstarter is at $2,796,895, so the 72 hour challenge was met.$503,105 by the end of Turkey Day to meet the next one as well as assure 3 more new episodes.
And stop poking logic holes in my jokes!

new update is up. He doesn't bring up anything KTMA, but Joel is offering backers' names in the credits for anyone who pledged over $85 if we hit 3.3. He also added an $85 prize and promises more coming tomorrow.

I'm sure for some the KTMA thing is intriguing but I'm not really interested in that. I mean the first season on Comedy Central wasn't that great so I can't imagine those episodes being any better. I did up my pledge to $35 though because you get a couple free episodes of old-school MST3K and that's a steal at that price.

Maybe it's just me, but I found the KTMA episodes to be really fun. It helps that they did shit totally up my alley like Phase IV, City on Fire and Superdome. Honestly even though I saw some of the CC episodes and lived through the Sci-Fi era my fondest MST3K memories are from when I was sick at the tail-end of my first run through university watching what KTMA episodes I could find in Fall 2008 (having gone through the entire CC/Sci-Fi run in Summer 2008).
I will not disavow that I also have an extreme fondness for pizza and for pasta and KTMA brought that together.
EDIT: I also want to draw the battle lines that KTMA had my favorite part of all the theme songs ("Joel says when you got lemons, you make lemonade") and also "extra parts" which I prefer to "special parts".

I can't imagine those episodes being any better They're interesting from a historical perspective, but not a great lot of fun to watch. They didn't do scripts back then and just ad-libbed the whole thing, so things fall flat a lot, and can sometimes go several minutes without any of them even saying anything.

I have a good portion of the KTMA episodes that are out there, sourced from old VHS tapes, and I agree, it's best viewed for the historical perspective and watching everyone get their footing. Watching them do bits that end up getting recycled later on, comparing jokes from repeated movies, seeing them get embraced by the Minnesotan audiences, it's pretty fascinating. Especially the few weeks they did near Christmas where Crow volunteers to be frozen as part of an experiment and gets turned into their Christmas tree, and they keep showing the same footage of him getting cryogenically frozen over and over. It was so weird to watch.
