The series has a lot of recognition, but depending on your tastes, there were some turkeys. I mean, Tim Richmond and Marion Jones are both regarded as some of the weaker subjects of the original group.
My go-to will always be Four Days in October. To me, it violated every rule of what it was supposed to be; it was a major event, and it had bias (and I say that as a guy who doesn't care for the Yankees) because MLB Films made it, and it focused exclusively on the Red Sox, which I always view as a documentary no-no (even if you hate the alternate side, you at least give them a moment). The Steve Bartman one where they tried to make parallels to Bill Buckner was also very weak. You know... I don't think there was a good baseball-themed one besides the rotisserie league.

I haven't seen all the ones from this year, but did they ever make one about the 01 World Series? Because that had everything. Way more subject matter than the Bartman one. I didn't mind the story, but the Bartman thing is 30 minutes of subject matter, tops. They wasted too much time explaining that Cubs fans were drunk assholes, so far as to even interview one specific drunk asshole. What garbage in a usually garbage-free series.
There was a GREAT baseball themed 30 for 30 in Brothers in Exile. That was probably top 10/15 for me in terms of the stakes they escaped, namely Orlando being caught with agents and then him being stranded on that island. To where they ended up, as famous millionaires in the US.
The ones I wasn't a fan of were The U part 2 (and I'm a Canes fan) there wasn't enough story for 2 whole shows and they completely gloss over that 01 team which is probably the best CFB team ever. The Jimmy The Greek one was pretty lame IMO, and I'm huge into the gambling side of sports. But there was nothing there. That one EASILY should have been a 30 for 30 short. Little Big Men. Straight Outta LA.
Also, Playing For The Mob was terrible. The story was there, as it's great TV story. But they forced stupid movie tie-ins, and the end result was one of the hardest to watch 30 for 30's to me. Juicy story, terrible production.

But at least it will make a great recruiting tool for USC's next head coach.

Nothing yet on the 01 series That's a shame. In addition to it being one of the most exciting top-to-bottom WS of the last 30 years, you have Johnson/Schilling, Luis Gonzalez steroid rumors, 9/11, and the Yanks losing. But come to think of it, I think I remember HBO Sports doing something on it so maybe it's not necessary?

Straight Outta LA was a weird movie, where Ice Cube did it to discuss the rise of N.W.A. coinciding with the Raiders moving to downtown Los Angeles because the elderly Rams owner committed an act of white flight and took the team to Anaheim. While I do understand the fact that the Raiders were a team that was embraced by minorities and inner-city people, which were the same people that might have listened to West Coast rap, it is silly to assume that both went hand-in-hand, other than the fact that Raiders gear became Crips clothing. I, too, would like to see that Diamondbacks/Yankees World Series be discussed.

"There's No Place Like Home" is far and away the worst one for me.

I disliked Broke. I thought it would tell stories about athletes who were rich and lost it all, the documentary is about that but it is only interviews which I disliked.

"There's No Place Like Home" is far and away the worst one for me. How did I miss that one? Holy shit, that was the worst. Hands down. Awful story, awful protagonist. Whiny guy begs filthy rich man to bid on rules of basketball so he can feel like he accomplished something. You could have told the story in 7 minutes, and honestly that would have been best served on this kid's YouTube page and not on ESPN's main channel. I swear this kid is someone's son or nephew or something, because he and his "cause" and his journey in no way deserved 1/1000th the exposure. Total fraud.

The only two I did not like were Straight Outta LA, The U Part 2, and There's No Place Like Home.
I've always wanted to see one on the 01 World Series and/or The XFL.

Nothing yet on the 01 series There's a 30 for 30 Short titled "First Pitch" that is about how baseball and the success of the New York Yankees helped soothe America in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, but it's largely about George W. Bush and his first pitch at Yankee Stadium prior to Game 3 of the 2001 World Series. It's pretty good but I tend to agree that a full-length film on all that happened in baseball following the terrorist attacks and the 2001 World Series would be captivating. As for my least favorite, they tend to be the ones where the main characters don't seem to have learned from the folly of their ways. "Broke" sticks out as the most obvious example, as instead of a cautionary tale about living fast and loose with your money, it almost seems to be a celebration of the "bling-bling" culture that drove so many athletes to the poor house in the 1990s and 2000s. I also was really let down by "Trojan War", because instead of a story about the rise and fall of the Southern California football team, it's basically all about the rise and how awesome Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart were, with basically a footnote dedicated to the program's unraveling and Pete Carroll jettisoning Los Angeles for Seattle. At least in "The U", while the former players take almost no responsibility and show zero accountability for themselves or their actions, the film acknowledges and delves into the seedier elements of the program. I was also not much of a fan of "I Hate Christian Laettner" and "Run Ricky Run", because if you're going to dedicate an entire full-length documentary to one single subject, that person better be an incredibly captivating individual. That's why "The Marinovich Project", "Brian and The Boz", and "Big Shot" were so great, because Todd Marinovich, Brian Bosworth, and John Spano led such fascinating lives and their stories are so unique. There's nothing especially unique about Christian Laettner, he was a middle-class kid who grew up a star athlete, became a legend at Duke, and sort of fizzled out in the NBA. The same can be said for Ricky Williams. He was a football player and a stoner. That might be good for a short film but that's about it.

I didn't like From Elway to Marino because I found it very boring. I didn't like all that talking about the draft. I wanted to see some action.

The Bartman one was kind of interesting until at the very end the director tried to say "If Bill Buckner can forgive Red Sox fans then Bartman should be able to forgive Chicago"

Broke is definitely my least favorite because of the format. I just finished watching Trojan War and thought it was solid but wouldn't be on a list of my favorites.
