So I didn't even know about this until the late 90s as I don't think it was brought up by anyone at the time and they were able to keep it quiet by and large.
My questions-when did you find out that Kerry did indeed lose his foot, and two-if you look back now is it pretty obvious something was up when you see his matches afterwards?

Kind of surprised no one has ever used this as a username.

Says everything about how talented a wrestler he was to have one foot and still be that good.

Could have sworn he wrestled barefoot for a spell, but that was Kevin.
That "A Current Affair" after Kerry died and Fritz revealed it was when I found out.

Could have sworn he wrestled barefoot for a spell, but that was Kevin. That "A Current Affair" after Kerry died and Fritz revealed it was when I found out. It was not a well-known fact before he died. Some people in the business knew, but not even all of them (including guys he was working with) and those did were mostly aware of it through vague rumors. He did a lot to hide it from everybody and was mostly successful in that regard. McMahon knew enough to try to use it to try to get an AWA show cancelled but that's McMahon, not one of the boys. Col. DeBeers didn't know about it until he accidentally pulled it off during a late '80s match in front of maybe a hundred or two pre-internet fans. I imagine it started becoming a more-confirmed thing among the workers once he started working for the WWF (Roddy Piper's the only person beyond DeBeers and Kerry's closest circle that I've heard claim to know about it before his death, so I imagine what McMahon knew trickled into the roster). It definitely didn't make it to the general fanbase until his death (most of us who were aware of his accident had been told he crushed it and it had to be rebuilt/healed, not that he completely lost it. Be interested to see if and when it's first mentioned in the Observer to see what that crowd knew. Regarding him wrestling barefoot - there's a famous story that at one show, he wanted to work barefoot but was told no, so he painted "boots" on his feet.

I first found out through Dutch Mantell in an column he wrote for WOW-Im not sure how long he knew, I think he was just addressing it since it had been a long standing rumor. So it mighta been 2000 or so.

The "Kerry Von Erich lost his recently surgically-repaired foot trying to get a cheesburger" story is one of my favorite bits of wrestling lore regardless of the veracity.

Col DeBeers did so in a Las Vegas house show where supposedly someone might have taken a picture but nothing confirmed. This happened about a few months before SuperClash III so WWF tried to get the state of Illinois to cancel it because they have something about not letting someone with a disability compete. The athletic commission made a ruling since they already made a waiver for someone without a foot before they wouldn't force them to pull Kerry. The AWA supposedly had Larry Zbyszko as backup in case Illinois ruled against them.

It was in Star Magazine right after he died. My father showed it to me. That's how I learned he had died and that his real name wasn't Von Erich

I have to wonder if Vince ever asked him if they could do anything with that, but I guess that'd have been a firm no from Kerry.

I heard about it shortly after he died, but I remember thinking the motorcycle crash and amputation happened shortly before his suicide and was its catalyst. It wasn't until a couple years ago I learned the amputation was during his World Class period

I dunno. I remember finding out he had died off the radio, on my way to hockey practice. When I found out he lost his foot didn't leave enough of a mark on me to remember the time I found it out.

Its more to be a dick to the AWA because... remember when Vince said how Bischoff was in the wrong because he was just trying to hurt Vince and Vince never did that? Well he's a lying dick.

I kind of wonder how Kerry hid it from everyone in the locker room. He had to change, put his boots on and shower at the arena I would imagine.
I like most everyone else learned about it in the aftermath of his death.

I like most everyone else learned about it in the aftermath of his death. Some guys were their masks in the damn shower to hide their real faces. If what I hear about Kerry is at all true, "Kerry's so f***ed up he's showering with his boots on!" would seem like a normal occurrence.

Interesting. I definitely remember hearing about it while he was in WWF. My family and me even tried to figure out which one was the prosthetic leg from watching him in ring. Weird they'd bring it up on German WWE broadcasts and not elsewhere.

They were both kind of dicks. Verne was, too, though, since this would have been after Verne supposedly tried to pay Iron Sheik to injure Hulk Hogan. If that's even remotely accurate, Verne had it coming.
