What was the general consensus when he held the title? Was he held in high regard like Joe and Punk? I only watched when he won the title, and kinda stopped following ROH after that until 2011.

I think a lot of people stopped watching ROH then haha. IIRC he was kind of a divisive figure. Some smarks were okay with him while others just found it weird how out of the blue it was for him to get the belt. Smarks definitely weren't creaming for him the same way they creamed for Joe and Punk.

I will confirm that I personally didn't dispense of any cream for Mr.Morishima nothing against him he's just not my type.It was different so I'll give them that but it did nothing for me.

I like the guy, but I think there were better choices than him for ROH Champ at the time. Also didn't help that he ended Homicide's truncated reign, which won him no points with me, as Homicide is one of my faves.

I think a lot of people grew to like him but his run went a little too long/they waited too long to pull the trigger on Nigel. The initial hatred seemed more on him not being a part of the roster and ending Homicides run after what seemed a very short time.

In my opinion Adam Pearce has got to love Morishima, because after he injured Bryan's retina, and prevented him from winning the nwa belt, it gave Pearce the biggest push of his career.

I loved it but I don't think I was in the majority.

I know it felt really random.

I loved his title reign. Tons of great matches and a really good monster run with the belt. I was also lucky enough to see his first match with Samoa Joe, as well as three matches with Danielson live.

I think it got started on the wrong foot. He beat Homicide like 2 months after Homicide's 2 year build to the title so that added some sourness.
And he looked like a giant babyman.

I still think they should have given it to Mohammed Yone.

Thanks for the archived thread with the reactions to it, I wish KENTA would've beaten Dragon for it at GBH5, but I guess Gabe had to finish out the storyline with Homicide where he vowed to get the title before the year was out only for him to lose it a couple of months later.

It felt like Gabe having a boner for Japan and forcing something on people that they didn't really want, though I think most will admit Morishima was pretty talented.

like most things in ROH in 2007, at the time it was hated and "not as good as 2006"

I loved Morishima as champion, if only because his matches tended to have very interesting psychology built around his size advantage. Claudio, Kevin Steen, Austin Aries, Roderck Strong, and Bryan Danielson all wrestled him differently than usual, and it made every main event exciting because even the "couldn't possibly win" challengers had some intrigue of "So just how is THIS guy going to believably match Morishima?"
Also, I'm a huge 90's AJPW nerd, so I appreciated and adored how Morishima flipped the standard AJPW foreign monster tropes - his whole heel routine was a delightful medley of Stan Hansen, Dr. Death, and Terry Gordy references.
But yeah, they waited way too long to pull the trigger on Nigel, and it seriously felt like a slap in the face to the roster for Morishima to come out of nowhere and win the title. It also seemed like a weird attempt to replace Samoa Joe as quickly as possible. Really, if Morishima had just been around longer before winning the title, it would have been way better received.

It was fine, but it did start out weird. He lost to Joe the night before and then destroyed Homicide to win the title. He was a good big man who was like the Japanese Terry Gordy and ironically, Gordy's first major title win was a shock win over Jumbo in 1990.
I was fine with Homicide dropping the title. He was in TNA at the time and just a month later when ROH announced PPV, he was pulled from the promotion. Also, his World Title matches as champion were meh.
The bigger problem with ROH in 2007 was Faction Warfare.

I really liked him. But then again, I'm a mark for Vader-style clubbings.

I was going to a ton of ROH show during this time and honestly I never noticed any disatisfaction among live crowds during his reign.
KENTA and Naomichi Marufuji were ROH regulars around this time, Kenta Kobashi had torn the house down less than two years prior, and the Blood Generation/Do Fixer match was all the rage the year before. And how can you forget Milano Collection A.T. and Ebessan?
Japanese talent had already been integrated as a major part of ROH and I don't think the Morishima reign came off as random at all. Not to mention the fact that he had AWESOME matches, which didn't hurt.

I loved it. Great time for ROH. I hate how everyone these days feels like everyone gets a turn. He was the right figure while amazing support feuds and stories were anchoring it all. It felt right and it was right
