Better in retrospect than it seemed at the time.

Won people over at time, but the big angle in ROH at the time had been Homicide chasing the title, and to have it ended abruptly was not something people were fans of.

I loved it, mainly because Morishima was something different. Sapolsky has explained in interviews why they did what they did with the title at the time. After such a great reign by a technician like Danielson, the thought was that whomever had the title after him had to be a different style of wrestler for them to be well received as champion. Another technical wrestler trying to follow Danielson's reign would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible to pull off because Danielson was so established as "the best in the world," etc. The conclusion of Homicide's story had to be winning the title, but in Sapolsky's mind, Homicide was great in the role of challenger chasing the title, but when it came to being "the guy" to headline every night in title matches, he wasn't ideal for that role. Thus, he had a very quick reign before Morishima's more lengthy reign, as that different style world champion compared to Danielson. And he went on to have a bunch of fantastic defenses while he had the title. Even though he was new to ROH, I didn't view that as a negative. A big guy like him coming in and quickly becoming a major player gave things more unpredictability. And some added realism. A guy his size in a promotion full of small guys should be plowing through the roster, so that's what he did.

On paper it sounded great but the execution and timing was off. ROH 2007 felt like a year they were trying to do the opposite of everything they did in 2006 and Gabes love of Japanese Wrestling was on full display with all the gang wars, strong style, and Dragon Gate/NOAH call ups.
I just hated his finisher. He made it look like death but it still looked way too basic to be a finisher.

I didn't know that, I thought folks were behind for it, figured he would make it to WM weekend at least, but the title loss to Morishima turned me off for a bit and I would keep up with ROH through the videowires and their forum at the time. At least Homicide could say he was champ, I'm still surprised that Daniels never got a run with it.

At ROHBot Central aka the official ROH message board, people liked Morishima but hated how he beat Homicide for the title. Even the diehard puro marks there struggled to find good in the move. Once his reign went into full swing, he won over most. But people wanted Nigel to win the belt from him. And in classic ROH fashion, they waited too long to make the move and fans turned on him.

It's hard to accept ROH "waited too long" to switch the title to Nigel as a fact, rather than the opinion of a small portion of the fan base, considering Morishima only had the title long enough for essentially either 1 or 2 shows to take place in each city on the touring schedule. In my opinion, it's more potentially harmful to do too many title changes in a short period of time than to wait until a champion has had a chance to appear in a market more than just once as the champion. Homicide won it in December, Morishima in late February, and then Nigel in early October. To do three title changes in less than 10 months time could (or could not, it's a risk after all) end up being more damaging to the title's value in the long run. Especially since the ROH title was more known at the time for its stability in comparison with some of the larger promotions that did switches more frequently.

It was less that they waited too long, it was more that Nigel was the clear/obvious choice and they had him job to Morishima twice before letting him win. That may have been NOAH-mandated, but it killed Nigel's heat. It's notable that prior to that, ROH champions tended to be dethroned by someone they had not previously defended against (there were exceptions, but it was a definite trend) - and Nigel's two clean losses to Morishima showed why that's a good idea.

Which led to one of the most iconic "better in retropspect" title reigns and also one the most disastrous. Seriously, Nigel's title reign feels like a greek tragedy. The crowd turned on him and shat on him for most of his reign, his body wore out, he eventually went heel because of both, and by the end of his title reign, he was so done he got taken out by a well over the hill Jerry Lynn. Conceptually fantastic, but at the time, it was rough.
