So, I've never seen a single Star Wars movie (I know, I know). I'm wondering if there is some sort of "definite collection" of movies to have. I understand that the original trilogy has been altered quite a bit in rereleases, so what are the best versions to get, either the least changed ones or the ones with the most tolerable changes?

The special editions had no affect on the plot, so you can pretty much watch any version if you just care about the story.
If you're anti-CGI, then look for the original versions.

I agree. You can watch the current releases. It won't hurt the plot. I do recommend the machete order though. I used it with my 6 year old to great success. Watch it in 4,5,2,3,6 and now 7 order. 1 doesn't really add anything to the story and you can go back and watch if you like.

Download Adywan's "A new hope" and Q2's "Return Of The Jedi" as they're what the Star Wars DVD/Blu Ray releases should be
As for Empire, you can watch any version as IMO that was actually improved with it's changes (which are minor anyway)
As for prequels TPM & AOTC are complete dogshit (Save a few cool set pieces) but ROTS is actually really good (A few issues but nothing that killed it for me, Although "NOOOOOOOO" was awful)

I've been hearing about this a lot lately (I first heard about it from Stardust during UpUpDownDown). Is the entire point for the viewer to take a detour and see the Anakin/Vader transition after it's revealed that Vader is Luke's father? Essentially: Vader: I am your father. Viewers: Serious? ? Vader: Serious! Here's how it happened! *Watches episodes II and III Vader: Now that we got that out of the way, let's continue with our story. *Watches Episode VI

Yeah, pretty much. It's an interesting order to watch the movies in.
As for definitive editions, I don't hate the CGI updates to the VFX they made in the special editions. I also like that they made the Emperor look and sound like the Emperor in his brief appearance in Empire's special editions (he had a completely different actor in that scene originally from Ian McDiarmid). Just some of the other changes are very "Ehhhhh." Like Greedo shooting first not only changing the narrative for that scene, but also being really poorly edited, like something out of a college freshman's film class.
Disney is putting the original theatrical cuts on Blu-Ray, though.

4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7 .....
do NOT watch any of these fan edits, not because they are bad or anything, they aren't the true originals

Yeah, I didn't mind most of the changes, but things like Darth Vader's "No!" in Return of the Jedi and the recent "We know you don't like Greedo shooting first so we'll just edit it so that they both shoot" change in A New Hope strike me as weird. I guess I appreciate the effort, but those scenes really didn't need anything further than what they originally had.

Or Luke's ridiculous scream edited in when he leaps down the chute in Cloud City in the original SE. Which wasn't even his scream; it was the Emperor's death scream from ROTJ I believe. At least they got rid of that in the DVD SE.
Granted I'm probably the only person who doesn't mind them replacing Old Man Force Ghost Anakin with Hayden Christiensen in the DVD's. I don't LIKE it, but I don't dislike it.

I am showing my sister them for the first time.....the order we ended up doing is odd.
4,5,6, then 7, holiday special (first time I ever watched it start to finish lol), and this upcoming weekend is 1,2,3.

My friend who has never seen Star Wars in her life before is watching them in the 4,5,1,2,3,6 way before she sees 7. I told her the best way would be to watch it as 1,2,3,4,5,6 but then i thought about it and yeah were 5 ends 1,2,3 being put in there as like a filler backstory for people to watch makes sense after the whole revealing of Vader being Lukes father.
Either that or when Obi-Wan is talking to Luke he tells the story to Luke which cuts to episodes 1,2,3 and then back to them talking on Dagobah to finish off 6.

I'd never recommend anything but release order for the first viewing.

Skip episodes 1-3 altogether. Completely unnecessary viewing. There are made for TV movies and special and tv series and you don't "need" those. So you CERTAINLY don't need the prequels since the tv series stuff is more canon than that soap opera money grab.

Watch the prequels. They're not bad at all.

Watch 4,5 and 6. Then wait at least a year in order to build anticipation for the excellent prequels, that'll give you more of an authentic experience.

Watch Episodes IV, V and VI in their original form if you can.
Then watch Episode VII

I always recommend this order (including comics, TV, etc):
1: The Phantom Menace 2: Attack of the Clones 3: The Clone Wars 4: Revenge of the Sith 5: Droids 6: A New Hope (with a detour to Troops) 7: The Holiday Special 8: Escape to Hoth 9: Empire Strikes Back 10: Shadows of the Empire 11: Return of the Jedi 12: The Force Awakens
Both Ewoks films and the cartoon are optional

Watch the semi-special editions. Fantastic fan edits that have the good added special edition stuff, but not the dumb stuff.
And for the prequels you should watch the Anti-Cheese edits.
