Okay, I'm not sure if I'm using the right words in the thread title, so let me explain.
There are a lot of outlets and organizations that discuss professional wrestling, whether it's the state of the industry or the quality of matches. But at the end of the day, is there a single outlet that has the best and most impartial insight on professional wrestling?
For example, growing up, I relied on Pro Wrestling Illustrated's annual achievement awards to identify the year's best. Overtime, I realized it was a farce. WWE has its own process (Slammys, WWE.com lists, etc), but we know those tend to be more than biased at times. I know a lot of people rely on guys like Dave Meltzer or Wade Keller, and even they tend to have flaws.
So who's the definitive authority on professional wrestling?

Meltzer, imo, is by far the best. From the wrestlers, to the offices, to the fans, from the 80's till now.
He's humble too, and knows his place, not afraid to admit he doesnt know things, and defers to other experts. He did this before every schmo with a computer could profess their opinions and what they think they know....yawn. Never one to put himself over....seems like the only people who dont like him, are ones that are miffed he didnt rank their favourite's match high enough.
Started the wrestling media, and still leads the way.

I'd say Meltzer comes the closest.

Meltzer's probably the closest we've got, but as you've stated, even he has his flaws and biases.

I'd echo the Meltzer sentiment, and also nominate John Pollock of LAW/Review-a-Wai fame as heir apparent to the "one who can casually and seamlessly drop 20 years worth of trivia into a conversation" mantle.

If we're talking about pure trivia and history, though, not "quality review" standards, then Jim Cornette must surely be in the conversation. There's no territory too small, or no worker too unknown, that Jim Cornette doesn't seem to have at least ONE story about them.

Meltzer isn't definitive by any means, but yeah, about the closest you'll get. And that's even considering he's no longer at the peak he achieved during the late 90s when he had so many ears everywhere.

I gotta cosign on Meltzer. Any time a significant wrestling show happens I gotta know what Dave thought about it. Whether I agree or disagree with his assessments, he always has interesting points to make with decades of anecdotal backstory to support whether something works or not. You can tell where his preferences are but I never get the impression that he's got an ego about him, can convey that a show is good even if it's not his preference.
A lot of wrestling analysts tend to act like the sky is falling every time WWE screws something up, Dave is usually great for level headed criticism.

No love for Wade Keller?
I don't care for his (somewhat pompous) personality, but he knows his stuff. Ditto Brice Mitchell. They're both more opinionated than Meltzer, though, or at least come off that way in their audio shows. The first time I heard Meltzer I was surprised at how much of a modest Everyman he comes across as.

The first time I heard Meltzer I was surprised at how much of a modest Everyman he comes across as. And that's exactly why Keller and Mitchell aren't as respected as Meltzer. They aren't as modest, and have allowed their opinion and personal feelings about people to cloud the way they report information in the past. Meltzer's on a different level of credibility and respect.

David Shoemaker will be the next Meltzer if he wants to be.
