Have been on a nostalgia kick recently and decided to rewatch this series again.
This was one of my favorite series for my older brother and me. We actually taped most of the episodes off TV (save for 2-3 episodes) and went on a viewing binge from time to time until the tapes ran out.
Although even as kids we noticed "they look nothing like their original designs" (tm Nostalgia Critic), I am not afraid to say that as kids we loved watching every second of it.
One specific thing for me is the following though:
-Being German, the series was of course aired with a German dub here. And it actually is one of the reasons why this show has fond memories for me because this is one of the few times where the dub was better than the original.
When I finally saw the original episodes ago, I was amazed how much better the German dub was by comparison.
Here are some of the examples why I like our dub better:
1) Kevin was voiced by the VA who also voiced Saber Rider in the German dub of the show named after him. He just had such a cool voice that really put the "he" in "hero". I was actually amazed how much more wimpy Captain N sounded in the original.
2) Pit, or rather Kid Icarus, had a normal sounding voice and they also did not translate his "-iticus this, maximus that" speech quirk. You don't believe how that got annoying pretty fast.
3) The translation in general. It was not the case of some of US Anime dubs where they changed the whole tone of the show by mistranslating everything but where they could they did some joke changes of their own that would make more sense to a German viewing audience which resulted in a lot of quotable material that got spread around the school yard and that me and my brother still quote from time to time. This was a case where the dubbing company had fun with their dub and it really showed.
Another thing why I prefer watching the German dub version is that they still have the songs intact. Others might not mind it but it just does not feel right watching Captain N without covers of Billy Idol's "Wild Wedding", Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or the "Bonanza" theme.
Only the first 2 seasons of Captain N got dubbed into German though and I was surprised to learn that there was a third season (with episodes like "Misadventures in Robin Hood Forest", "A Tale Of Two Dogs" and "The Fractured Fantasy Of Captain N"). I am wondering if I should check those out sometime.
So yeah, what are your thoughts on Captain N? Also a cherished childhood memory or something you had locked up in your basement of bad cartoons you used to watch?
