And I don't mean a hooker and I don't mean renting friends. I'm talking your actual friends. In order to entice them to do things with you, you pick up the tab on things. Car rental? Restaurant? Movie? Etc........
Does this apply to anyone else? Since it's New Year's Eve, I figure this is a day where people spend, one way or another.

No.
I'd be happier spending the money on me.

Well if that's what it takes to hang out with you then I guess they're not your friends.

I would (to an extent, of course), if I could ask people to hang out with me in the first place.

I used to. Now that I'm jobless and can't afford to nobody wants anything to do with me thus I'm sitting home alone on New Year's Eve.

To hang out? Nah. If we're hanging out and decide to do something I'll pay but I also know that my friend would do the same if I didn't beat him to it.

Yeah, all the time. I've called a friend and said, "Wanna go for a beer?" "I don't have any money" (Hr does) "I didn't ask how much money you had, I asked if you wanted to go for a beer"
Sometimes they'll pick up the tab, next time I will. It's just being, uh, friends.

My buddies and I always take turns buying stuff. Usually lunch or movie tickets. Hell my friend just bought me battlefront because they were tired if waiting fir me to buy it myself.
I get thus isn't the narrative of the op, but technically fits criteria

My kids seem to insist on me paying for everything when we go out and do things.

I've done this, unashamedly, in the lonelier times of my life. If a friend lives hours away, we're both bored, and I'm lonely and/or in a depressive phase then that company is absolutely priceless. Nothing shameful about it at all. When the other option is at best painful boredom and at worst 'might kill myself' I think I made the right call.

I've only ever done this once, years ago, to see a film where I bought his ticket because he really didnt want to go.
I felt so.....begruding of it it nearly hurt the friendship, so I never did that again.

God no.
I love doing things for my friends, but those are my friends. I could care less about people that don't like/are apathetic towards me. The desire in me to fit in and be liked by as many as possible perished many moons ago. I just don't have the desire to be a socialite. It annoys me. You annoy me, whoever you are. (implied you, not OP)
