I skimmed over the FAN thread about Lothario, but don't get the meme. What's the appeal in talking about this guy? Why are people even mentioning him anymore? It's sort of puzzling like how Beyond the Mat came out in the late 90s, but Dennis Stamp didn't become uber popular until 2006 or so (presumably once RD Reynolds and Blade Braxton made references to him on Wrestlecrap Radio). Honestly I don't either. I want a shoot answer. Like I get he was a fat balding guy who was unknown outside of Texas and he wasn't over. But that was it. I don't have any problem with him being mocked. I just don't care enough about him either way for it to be funny. HE SAID FUNNY THINGS! "I don't do any tricks." "I'm not coming if I'm not booked." Dude was delightfully the saltiest.

I do remember Sid being cheered over Michaels at least twice on PPV. The gimmick really didn't help him, it wasn't a main event Face thing at all. Probably the exact year smark fans started becoming noticeable. They booed him for the same reason people boo Cena today. Adult fans felt patronized by a character who smiled and said he loved his fans every week. Ironically enough, in one year he went from dancing with kids in the ring, to flashing his butt on TV and making sexual innuendos

The stripper act was never a face gimmick, yet they retained it and wondered why the largely male fanbase detested him.

Nah, Stamp was the breakout star of that movie LONG before RD and Blade. He gets referenced on a lot of worked-y shoot-y indie commentary as far back as 2002. Who are some people who mentioned Dennis Stamp prior to Wrestlecrap Radio? Can you provide me with a link to any interviews in which Stamp was name-dropped before 2006?

I forget which Rumble, 95 or 96 but once he wins, dude just starts straight up stripping.

Had they changed it to something more along the lines of the show stopper gimmick he had later on, it might have worked. Or, done better against the nWo at least.

There were better alternatives to Shawn Michaels back in the day, despite his good to great matches in 1996.
I want to see a high flying worker? Macho Man Randy Savage was still an active wrestler and had a shed load more charisma, and Owen Hart could match Shawn Michaels move for move.
A relatable babyface? Bret Hart had that down pat. Alternatively, Sting was on the other channel.
Star Power? The loudest pops were for Ultimate Warrior and Sid during Shawn's reign, with long-term plans being the Warrior dethroned HBK later in 1996. Alternatively, his buddies and Hulk Hogan were mainstream attractions.
