Anyone else think that plucky upstart Sami Zayn would get more mileage out of his WWE run if he stole the gimmick of indy legend El Generico? If he took Genericos mask and mannerisms he would become iconic. The "humble guy who loves to be in DIS BUSINESS" just isn't cutting it, there's only so much you can do with that.
The world needs El Generico back.
What are the chances Zayn pulls a Mick Foley and busts out El Generico during a heated feud? I'm sure Generico wouldn't mind seeing as he's taking care of orphans in Tijuana (however I heard a rumor that he might be dead. Not sure if its true.)

I do not. Letting him talk about get over with his facial expressions is going to help him in front of large TV audience much more then El Generico could.

El Generico's dead, yo. Read a book. People need to quit disrespecting the memory of a dead luchador.

I'm happy for Sami Zayn to stay Sami Zayn.
That being said, I'd love if WWE bought the rights to Ole by the Bouncing Souls for use as Sami's main roster theme.

That'd be like putting Rey Mysterio's mask on Marcus Louis.

What does he know about what it takes to get over and pushed in a major wrestling company?!?!? What's next? Him thinking that Kevin Owens needed to lose a bit of weight to get pushed in the WWE?!?!?!

El Generico would be too limiting. I think he has a shot to break out as Sami Zayn, especially if Bryan is forced to retire.

TBF, Cornette is the same dude that almost f***ed up Owens in ROH (I still can't get over "WRESTLING'S WORST NIGHTMARE!" being used as a legit nickname in 20-f***ing-12) and really, the entire ROH product with his cornball booking. He had a point but he also wasn't entirely right in understanding what promotion he was booking for.

With Cornette, you have to take the good with the bad. He (and Gary Juster) helped save the company at a time when it was losing too much money to survive. Cornette and Juster were the middlemen in the deal with Sinclair Broadcasting, which ultimately saved the company.

I just don't like when people are like "See? He was right about Generico and Steen!" as if that somehow validates the relatively shite job he did with booking and overall presentation of the product.

I feel like El Generico may have ended up being pigeonholed as a comedy gimmick in WWE. I mean, you look at this goofy luchador who dances around, tears the house down in awesome matches and cuts these faux-Spanglish promos, and tell me which part of it WWE would emphasise.

I as a non follower of ROH appreciate his old gimmick but I must say he has a really likable face there is no need to mask him again. He's like Daniel Bryan but with a bit more personality.

Oh man, ROH was just a small part of El Generico's body of work. You'd need to look up some of his PWG and CHIKARA stuff (at the very least) to get a full feel for the character.

I'm not a Cornette apologist. I'm just saying you have to consider the good and the bad and it's not always an easy answer when it comes to judging how well someone did somewhere.

Well, at it's very core, El Generico WAS a comedy gimmick. Hell, even his selling was comedic at times. The character ended up catching on and becoming much more than it, frankly, should have been because the performer behind the mask was so absurdly talented but with most guys, this gimmick would kill them.

I absolutely love El Generico. That being said, Sami Zayn > El Generico.
