Feels like Shawn was backed from 1991 onwards. Vince saw long-term potential in Michaels. He took the IC Title from Davey Boy and was given nearly half an hour in a main event against Bret at Survivor Series 1992.

Why did he back him to the point that he was powerless against Shawn's power, especially in 1997? If I was the boss, I would not let him do that. That even included how he managed to change the finish to the match with Bulldog at One Night Only.

HBK benefited from a weakened WWF, since he had the implicit threat of bailing to WCW, giving him more bargaining leverage in a WWF low on star power and having financial problems.
