People keep harping on the fact that there was only a six point differential at the time of the fumble, but this is one of those cases of where the score isn't a good indicator of the ass whipping that was taking place...
Denver had shut our offense all the way down and when we never went into dual tight end formation to attempt to slow down the pass rush, Shula was pretty much saying f*** it and throwing in the towel....

It was a one score game with like 4 minutes left. If that's not a time for "all in" when the $#@!%$#% is the right time?

Remember when Andy Dalton made a tackle, broke his thumb, pretty much killed Cincy's SB chances? He basically did what we wanted Newton to do and quite frankly he screwed his team. That was a regular season game in early December. This was the Super Bowl. If Cam Newton dove into the pile and came out of it with a broken thumb, I think there would have been a minority of people who would have caterwauled about how the reward wasn't worth the risk, but I think the overwhelming majority would have lauded him for putting it all on the line in an effort to win a championship. He would have been regarded the same way Kevin McHale was after playing on a broken foot in the 1987 NBA Playoffs. In the long run, it hobbled him and probably cost him a few years on the back end of his career, but he was willing to risk that to win a championship. You never know if you're ever going to get back to the Super Bowl, so you've got to lay it all out because it may be your only chance.

A late season game with seeding on the line vs the biggest game of Newton's life up to this point. It's not even close to the same thing, dude.

And somewhere, Jason Witten watches his old buddies Wade and Ware win a ring and wonders, 'Why didn't I jump ship when I had the chance?'

What Newton did was stupid, but since we are talking about the situation, here it is. Please do not compare a broken thumb injury as with the way Newton was talking about his body, the more likely injury would a torn knee muscle or broken hip, which considering the recovery time would be all of next season, that would f*** the team greatly.
