I sincerely hope that, at some point, these early ECW guys (and other hardcore guys) get the recognition they deserve for not only putting their bodies through so much shit for our entertainment, but also setting an example as to what that type of punishment will do, leading to that style becoming increasingly rare. I'm not sure if it makes sense to anyone else but while that example is a negative one, I feel likes it's positive at the same time.

Raven claimed that Axl was so good that unlike Ian, he didn't need to do hardcore or scar himself every night. It's a shame he never got his due as a technical wrestler.

IIRC, Axl played a part in getting JT Smith over as an Italian. Axl and Hack Myers would team together against Smith and Little Guido. There was a spot in the match where the fans looked at JT and started chanting "JT's got a woo-dy!" (those vocal male fans and their observance of another man's pecker...you silly guys). JT had a reverse hammerlock on Axl and Rotten screamed & scurried to his corner, hiding his rear from JT as the fans kept "mocking" the born-again Italian. JT grabbed the mic and announced "Pretty spectacular, huh?"
Axl could do more than hardcore brawling; even in some of his matches teaming with Mahoney you could see there was a good technician underneath those scars and big body. There was just something about him. He was never going to be the #1 guy or anything, but he was good enough to stick around all that time.
Rest in peace, Axl.

So sad but sadly not a huge surprise. He did unimaginable harm to his body through his career. Seeing a guy go so young makes me glad that hardcore wrestling has more or less gone the way of the dodo in 2016. Oh no. This plus them being in ECW together = Vito using this on his social media in his feud against the WWE? Please have more class than that, JUST ONCE. It's not that hard. (I'm sorry, but Vito is very obnoxious when it comes to this, like Billy Jack Haynes. I know someone who he blocked because they didn't agree) But very shocking news, even given how he was health-wise. Knew of him since the GWF. Never met him, if anything we just said hi at a toy show I was attending (I did meet Dawn Marie there).

Yeah, because booking them on wrestling shows 20 years ago was a terrible thing. If they had instead just taken indy bookings from Tommy Dee in New York, working "no bumps, brother" matches against Greg Valentine or Jim Neidhart, none of those guys would have ever died years later. They'd all be alive! And never would've touched drugs at any point in their lives! Please.

Then you're going to have to hope for retribution for just about every promoter ever, because injuries come with the territory in professional wrestling, and in sports in general. It's not the fault of any individual promoter, and to use this situation to attack one with whom you clearly have an axe to grind is in pretty poor taste. Axl Rotten was pretty open about having made poor decisions about his own health, and carrying on wrestling even after his doctor told him he needed back surgery.

Because we all know ECW was the only promotion in the world where anybody used drugs or did a hardcore style of wrestling.
Fritz Von Erich and Atsushi Onita wave hello.

You just made me realize an odd contrast: athletes in 'legit' professional sports tend to retire by their mid 20s, or their late 20s at the latest, but professional wrestlers start at about the same age (late teens to early 20s) yet wrestle into their 30s and sometimes beyond. Wrestlers stick to their craft despite the fact that it's much more physically damaging than other kinds of professional sports!

Guess I was confused. I thought that he wound up running some indie fed and was noted as being as being a bad example of a promoter. Did I confuse him with Ian or someone else?

I just watched the barb wire city documentary. Axl looked really bad, he got severe Bell's palsy, I hope his condition improved over time, and that at least his last days ended in peace.
I would swear that he developed cte
