When you are prone to blood clots, you usually take blood thinners for life. Every bump would leave a huge bruise. He'd look like he was hit by a car after every match. That or Grimace. But luckily for Ventura, nothing can kill the Grimace.

I figured it was mostly his health, but also he had a really nice gig as a top respected commentator. His credibility came in large part because people talked him up as a great former wrestler, but most of those fans listening had become fans after he retired. He wasn't gonna risk his health just to come out of retirement and sully that reputation by doing a job to a guy he personally didn't like.

As has been said, he had a high profile as a commentator and was probably quite well paid for it. It's one thing to talk a good game - 'In my day, Gorilla, nobody messed with 'The Body'!' - but I think he was sensible enough to know that it would have been very detrimental to his health.
Besides, his overbearing braggart nature helped get his commentating role over. He could make claims like this, but wouldn't back them up when challenged. It's the sort of obnoxious behaviour you'd expect from a heel, and I think it served his colour commentator role well.

Ventura after his "retirement" in 1984, would continue to wrestle very easy matches on house shows (so tag matches, matches with zero bumps, etc) until 1986, including facing Hogan for the world title and Tito for the IC title. He would return for one more match in 1990, teaming with Piper to beat the Orient Express in LA. 1986? And again in 1990? I had absolutely no idea! I know he did the pilot for "Tag Team" with Roddy-is that the last match you're referring to?

Jesse did wrestle against the Hillbillies in 1985; thinking he teamed with Piper & Bob Orton. When Jim broke his leg, Jesse stepped aside as well.

What's Raven got to do with this? If you ever watched his NBC movie from like 2000 or so, you'd wonder the same, yet get the reference. 1999. I actually found out about Owen's death during a commercial break for this piece of garbage.

Because if he was wrestling, he couldn't say hi to Terri, Tyrell and Jade I thought it was Gorilla who always wanted to do it, Jesse just took it over.
