Rather than take up too much of the Civil War thread (and risk exposing people to potential spoilers they don't wish to see), I figured I'd start up a separate Infinity War thread. What we know so far: - Principal photography to take place in Atlanta from November 2016-June 2017.
- First feature film to be shot entirely in IMAX.
- Story will focus heavily on supporting characters.
- "67 distinct characters" will appear.
- Every character across both movies will have appeared at least once in a previous entry in the MCU.
- Integrating characters from Marvel TV shows will be "complicated" (Russos), but the "opportunity exists" (Feige).
- Teasers/trailers/One Shots planned that are "shot specifically for online that will never appear in the movie but that may appear as a kind of short film."
- Events will "span the entire Marvel universe."
Confirmed characters:{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Vision, Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wong, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Wasp, Thanos, Loki. Rumoured characters:{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}War Machine, Ego, Adam Warlock, Gen. "Thunderbolt" Ross, Erik Selvig, Sharon Carter, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daisy Johnson. For speculation's sake, as I said in the Civil War thread: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}It's my hope that we see the secondary Avengers, the Warriors Three, and the Guardians taking the fight to Thanos somewhere in space, while Dr. Strange, Panther, the Secret Warriors, and the Defenders hold off a Chitauri invasion on Earth. Just as things look bleakest, Cap, Tony, Hulk, and Thor return and turn the tide. That was my thoughts on the Big 3 with Tony sacrificing himself to allow the rest to escape and regroup with the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end. Hulk arrives and tells of Thor's demise.
There's only three acceptable mark out moments in Part 2 for me though.
1) Them showing the tv heroes in a cameo fighting Thanos' forces.
2) Drax vs Thanos.
3) That moment when Gamora/Nebula uses the gauntlet to bring the dead back so all hands are on deck, that shield smacks Thanos' in his fat head, and those two words get said by Cap. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}All three of those will have me marking out like a little girl, and since it didn't get used in Age of Ultron, I demand Thor's "We would have words with thee" too.

Sooner or later, they'll have to integrate the TV characters onto the movies. I'm an unabashed mark for the MCU shows, so having folks like Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Quake, and the SHIELD team show up to help would be really nice.

The only thing really holding it back appears to be the feud between Kevin Feige and Ike Perlmutter. Feige nearly quit Marvel altogether over their constant butting of heads before he finally won near-full control of Marvel's film division, but Perlmutter still has a massive say in the television division and apparently isn't about ready to let bygones be bygones. That being said, if Disney decide that the TV characters would boost the already substantial hype and earning potential of these movies, there'd be little Perlmutter could do to stop them. Charlie Cox and Chloe Bennett have confirmed that they're contractually obligated to work on the movies if needed, and Krysten Ritter has flat out said if asked she'll drop everything to work on one of the movies. The teasers/trailers/One Shots/short films the Russos have talked about could be a way to integrate them without having a bunch of characters just show up in the movie, since no matter how popular the shows are, there'll still be people watching Infinity War who've never watched them and would otherwise be lost. The flip side is if the Defenders in particular get used, you've got a Deadpool situation where young children will want to watch shows that contain very graphic violence and frank depictions of sex.

Parents, have you ever thought about turning the television off, sitting down with your kids, and hitting them?

My whole solution to this is just to have a random scene with the street level heroes fighting Thanos' minions. Just a quick scene for fan service. The only tv character that should get much play time if they go another route would be Coulson since he's already established. Maybe a scene where he and the Agents save Hawkeye's ass or something and give a hint they're coordinating a street level offensive while the rest go after the big man.

I think it's time they finally tied up the whole "Avengers don't know Coulson's alive" thread anyway. Fury knows. Hill knows. Sif knows (and since he would've been keeping an eye on her, Heimdall knows). It's a fair assumption that Coulson's resurrection was kept off the books and didn't go on the 'net with Romanoff's leak, so it'll make for a nice moment when the Avengers see him again for the first time. Similar to your suggestion, they could have a scene where the Avengers are backed into a corner and have to decide between mounting a defence of Earth, making an offensive on Thanos, or dividing their forces and attempting to do both knowing that would certainly mean failure on both fronts. Coulson could then introduce the Defenders and Secret Warriors to them (and thus the audience) as their "reinforcements" who will mount Earth's defence so Tony and Cap can lead the Avengers into the final battle against Thanos. They can then intercut between the battle on the streets and the battle with Thanos, much like the final act of Return of the Jedi. With Loki confirmed for both parts, and likely to be siding with Thanos, a little "remember me?" moment between him and Coulson would be a nice little callback. Assuming it's still on the air, they could have a tie-in episode or two of Agents of SHIELD dealing with them recruiting the Defenders and the flesh out the battle (though I imagine that may prove impossibly under budgetary constraints). Infinity War will be the biggest superhero movie ever, and the powers that be obviously know this, so it's a no-brainer to tie in all their currently-active properties for it.

Since a downer ending for part one is all but certain, I'd have a stinger of Coulson appearing before the still-alive Avengers as a way of teasing the next part and ending the plot thread of "is he alive or not?"

They've said in the past they don't want to crossover with the TV Shows as they don't want people to feel that they have to watch them to know what's going on.
Because far more people watch the movies than the shows.

I hadn't even thought about that. There definitely has to be a glimmer of hope in the stinger, and Coulson would be perfect for that. His death galvanised the team in The Avengers, it would be fitting that his reappearance gives them hope that not all is lost. They've said in the past they don't want to crossover with the TV Shows as they don't want people to feel that they have to watch them to know what's going on. Because far more people watch the movies than the shows. True, but with everyone from Feige on downwards acknowledging the demand and teasing the possibility, it seems inevitable that there will be some attempt at crossover eventually. It's certainly possible to introduce a handful of TV characters into the movies without requiring a glut of exposition; Coulson is a known character, and they can let Daisy, Jessica, and Luke's powers speak for themselves. Daredevil and Iron Fist's fighting abilities don't need any explanation (they don't even need to highlight Murdock's blindness), and Punisher's just a vicious dude with a ton of weaponry. Have them back up Spidey or Panther or a couple of the secondary Avengers as the characters the casuals can emotionally invest in, and you've delivered solid fan service without alienating those unfamiliar, and gotten more exposure for the TV shows.

Whilst I'd unabashedly pop for the Marvel Cinematic/TV universe collide, I have reservations that having that many characters will lead to bloat. The only comparison I can make is Doctor Who's series 4 finale, where they spent so much time bringing in other characters from related media that it sort of folded in on itself and the plot became something of an inconvenience to a series "ah, it's her/him" and then when the plot became central stage, it turned into "give'em something arbitrary to do to keep'em out of our hair." Granted, 3-4ish hours of film run-time over the 2 films versus 2-ish hours of TV does allow breathing space, but then the MCU also has dozens more characters to do some sort of service toward beyond "oh, look at that." They've said in the past they don't want to crossover with the TV Shows as they don't want people to feel that they have to watch them to know what's going on. Because far more people watch the movies than the shows. It's a good point, and I can see the risks involved, but you also have to recall considerably more people went to see the first two Iron Man movies than all of the other pre-Avengers movies combined, yet it didn't hinder Avengers Assemble from doing absolutely coconuts business. So, if the argument is the lack of immediate cross-over before the fact might disqualify the premise, then it could be countered that, as a business move, people will get into the shows and whatnot because of seeing its characters in the big bash and wanting to know more. True, it has a hindrance in terms of age restrictions, but I imagine the 18-34 demo in Marvel fandom makes up for loss of kids and whatnot. I assume kinda the like in DVD sales spike of the first Captain America and Thor movies post-Avengers, where people wanted to know more. That's even before the fact that the TV/Online shows already have a dedicated fanbase anyways.

I'm not so sure the films will total 4ish hours. The average Marvel film runs about 2:20, so I'd not be surprised with the amount they'll be packing in if these will run closer to 2:45-3 hours each, and that's not including the ancillary material they've got planned to release as teasers/One Shots or whatever. The more they talk about it being a "universe-spanning story" suggests to me that they want to use as many established characters from all possible levels to really drive that point home. Finally, the fact that they used the word "distinct" when they talked about the 68 characters they'd narrowed down to, which denotes clearly-defined and identifiable characters rather than generic background characters. For comparison's sake, the Lord of the Rings trilogy introduced around 60 such characters, excluding the likes of "Rohan archer #1" and "Orc chieftain #3". If you total up the surviving major characters and the most important supporting characters from all the MCU films so far you barely get out of the 30s (Hell, I can barely get to 50 including the Defenders, Coulson, Daisy, Helen Cho, Pepper, Jane, Darcy, and members of the Nova Corps and Ravagers). I can't see them introducing more than a handful of new characters, so I don't think it's that unrealistic to think they could use TV characters to fill out the cast in smaller roles.

It bums me out that Bobbi Morse isn't even considered noteworthy enough to be included in the discussion.

Assuming the shows continue on to last until the Infinity War duology, I'd say people would become even more acquainted with the main characters as we get to that point. Plus, you'll have Marvel pushing the hell out of certain characters in comics who feature in movies and shows so that their brand awareness among fans will be high.

It bums me out that Bobbi Morse isn't even considered noteworthy enough to be included in the discussion. Marvel certainly do have big plans given they managed to get her solo TV series off the ground after initially getting knocked back, and I could see them using her for a quick cameo somewhere. Are you counting the Inhumans? I could see them getting involved in Part 2 as a lead-up to their film. I didn't, as there's been no word as to what characters they'll be using in that movie, but even then I'm not so sure they would introduce more than two or three. The wild cards for me are Ant-Man, The Wasp, and Captain Marvel, as their movies are sandwiched between the two Infinity War parts. Will the events of those movies happen before Infinity Wars or happen in between?

I imagine Carol getting a very big role for Part Two, maybe even being the one heroine who helps rally the others to fight back. I suspect that Ant-Man & Wasp will be fairly self-contained, only touching upon the Infinity War story in a stinger.

I guess it depends on how the story is setup... but I could potentially see Carol as a semi-important member of SHIELD in part 1 at the very least name-dropped and have her origin setup.
