NJPW Road to Wrestling Dontaku April 23rd, 2016 | Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
A lot of the time, these “Road to” shows are pretty filler. However, the ones in Korakuen Hall this year have mostly delivered. Pair that up with what looks to be a fun card and color me intrigued. Also, the Wrestling Hinokuni show set for the end of April was cancelled due to earthquakes, meaning the card for that show has been spread out. Some were added to Wrestling Dontaku itself and some will be on the other upcoming “Road to” shows, making for some rather important events.
Manabu Nakanishi, Ryusuke Taguchi and Tiger Mask IV def. Gedo and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Roppongi Vice in 10:33 Rocky Romero wore his own variation of a Tiger Mask…mask. None of the Chaos members wanted to start against the biggest man in the match, Nakanishi. Barreta lost out and got tossed around for a while. The Chaos members had some fun moments against Nakanishi including Gedo shouting at Roppongi Vice and all three men trying to run back to the corner for comfort at different times. Pretty much everyone got their stuff in, some Nakamura tributes were thrown around and they had fun out there. Taguchi even got Nakanishi to use his ass for offense. Taguchi and Tiger Mask dove outside to take out Roppongi Vice, leaving Gedo to submit to a torture rack. That was inoffensive and rather enjoyable. **½
Great Bash Heel (Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma) def. David Finlay and Jay White in 10:24 The Young Lions that have seemingly wrestled a hundred times teamed up here to take on the former IWGP Tag Team Champions. This put that weak Invasion Attack Tag Team Title match to shame. White and Finlay not only worked like a solid team but they were out to prove how tough they are. It was great seeing Jay White talk trash to Makabe after a hard show to the jaw. No intimidation from either guy. Jay’s loud “FU*K YOU” to Makabe before a missile dropkick was all kinds of awesome and the same goes for Finlay’s “I’M GONNA KILL YOU” to Honma. Their resilient run ended when Honma hit Finlay with Kokeshi Otoshi. After the match, Jay continued to jaw with Makabe and wanted to fight some more. A damn good tag match that made the Young Lions look badass. They were fired up and the former champions seemed motivated to help them look great. ***½
IWGP Tag Team Champions The Guerillas of Destiny def. Captain New Japan and Juice Robinson in 8:13 So the last tag match was really good. This one never really came close. I don’t dislike the Guerillas of Destiny the way a lot of people online do. I actually really like Tama Tonga and think Tonga Roa is alright. Something just hasn’t clicked about their first two tag matches. They worked well as a unit here but this never really got interesting. A lot of that could be chalked up to their opponents this time though. The champs did standard heel tag stuff, Juice did his hot tag offense and Captain New Japan ate the pin after the G.O.D’s finisher, which I don’t know the name of yet. Mostly dull but I wouldn’t say it was outwardly bad. They attacked the Captain and Juice afterwards, so Honma and Makabe made the save to run of them off. *¾
Jushin Thunder Liger and Yuji Nagata def. NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA in 17:10 Now we’re talking. When this card was released, this was the match I was most looking forward to. Hell, KUSHIDA and Shibata are two of my three favorite wrestlers in NJPW. There was such a great contrast in programs here. Nagata and Shibata pretty much wanted to kill each other, while KUSHIDA and Liger wrestled to see who the better man was. Nagata and Shibata both kicked each other off of the apron at various times. At one point, Shibata, the illegal man, got kicked off the apron so he came back in, only to get hit with a ridiculous right hand from Nagata. If this was any indication, Shibata/Nagata is going to rule just like it did in the G1 24 two years ago. Liger put KUSHIDA in his own Hoverboard lock but KUSHIDA countered. Shibata stopped Nagata with an abdominal stretch though he fought out and broke up the submission. While they waged war outside, Liger countered KUSHIDA and pinned him with a backslide. This was great. The action was awesome, they didn’t give away too much for Wrestling Dontaku and they made me want to see the matches more than I did coming in. Job well done. After the match, Shibata and Nagata continued to go at it like the badasses that they are. ***¾
NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship: Hiroshi Tanahashi, Michael Elgin and Yoshitatsu (c) def. Bad Luck Fale, IWGP Intercontinental Champion Kenny Omega and Yujiro Takahashi in 15:31 The history of these titles is pretty much babyface team vs. random Bullet Club group. Yoshitatsu was in full Triple H mode during his entrance, wearing black and green and spitting water. I thought this was a wise match to put here because it gave the show a title match while also promoting the upcoming Omega/Elgin and Tanahashi/Fale matches. This was about what you’d expect. They teased the Styles Clash on Tatsu again only to have it broken up. Omega accidentally sprayed Fale in the face with the spray can before Tanahashi and Tatsu took him and Fale out. Takahashi nearly stole it with a low blow and roll up but Elgin kicked out before ending him with some powerbombs. Solid six man, but nothing more. **¾
Special Elimination Match: Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, EVIL, SADANA and IWGP Champion Tetsuya Naito) def. Chaos (Hirooki Goto, Kazuchika Okada, ROH World Television Champion Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI) w/ Gedo in 25:05 I appreciated the little touch of Ishii getting to come out last for his team. Okada is the top star of the Chaos but Ishii is the number one contender for the IWGP Title. SANADA carried a baseball bat with him to the ring. The crowd was pumped for this. Lots of cheers for Chaos but an even bigger reaction for Los Ingobernables. Everybody got to work their Wrestling Dontaku opponents as did YOSHI-HASHI and BUSHI. Naito and Ishii fought on the apron after going over the top. Naito dared Ishii to come for him before just calmly hopping off and getting himself eliminated. He then held Ishii in place so EVIL could eliminate him. He just continues to nail his character. A great exchange between EVIL and Goto saw Goto dump him over the top. BUSHI used the mist to knock Goto off of the apron. Okada fought hard to survive but a SANADA dropkick got rid of him leaving it up to YOSHI-HASHI. He made BUSHI submit and it came down to just him and SANADA. They went back and forth for a while, building some good drama. YOSHI-HAHSI nearly had it on several occasions before submitting to a dragon sleeper. I liked that the final three guys weren’t completely obvious. It was a good change of pace. SANADA came off looking like a somewhat viable threat to Okada. ***½
Los Ingobernables de Japon attacked Chaos, including Gedo after the match and left them lying. Naito cares so little about the title that he threw it at a fallen Ishii and left without it. The reaction for everything Naito and company did was incredible.
Overall: 7/10. Like a lot of the “Road To” shows, this was a rather easy watch. It clocks in at under three hours and three of the six matches were really good and another was pretty good. The opener was decent fun and the only really bad thing on the show was the G.O.D. tag match. This set up Wrestling Dontaku very well, which was ultimately the goal with this show. If you watch this and don’t get more excited for Shibata/Nagata, KUSHIDA/Liger, Okada/SANADA, EVIL/Goto and Naito/Ishii, I don’t know what would. There was also good build for Tanahashi/Fale and Omega/Elgin.

Card looks good for B level event, but not expecting any shocking results. Only match of interest which could go either way is EVIL/Goto.

Kushida/Liger should be good, as should be the Battle Of The Burned By TNA match between Okada and Sanada

Road to Wrestling Dontaku April 24th, 2016 | Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Like the previous night, New Japan held a “Road to Wrestling Dontaku” show with some matches to build the upcoming big show. There will be another on 4/27 that I’ll check out too.
Jay White def. David Finlay in 10:15 These two have had countless matches with each other and even worked great as a team the previous night. This was more of the same from these two. Jay White holds the lead in the series and it showed. He was brash at times, even slapping at David’s head as if he was toying with him. David had his leg worked on and sold it rather well. He began to make a comeback and scored a very close near fall on a German suplex. He tried for the Young Lions special, the Boston crab, but Jay reached the ropes. Jay than took the leg work done and utilized it with his own Boston crab. Once he put his knee into David’s back and wrenched back, Finlay had to submit. Another win in the series for Jay, who I look forward to seeing on his potential excursion to ROH. They fist bumped after a solid match. ***¼
IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Roppongi Vice and YOSHI-HASHI def. Captain New Japan, Ryusuke Taguchi and Tiger Mask IV in 9:54 More shenanigans from Rocky Romero, who again his own version of Tiger Mask’s mask. Captain New Japan seemed to only bring one outfit for the weekend as he was still sporting his Bullet Club hunter attire though he faced Chaos here. A lot of fun was poked at the Captain being inept. His teammates wouldn’t tag him, while Barreta begged for him to become the legal man. Outside of that, this didn’t do much for me. Also, I still really don’t like Taguchi. Anyway, YOSHI-HASHI won via submission. I’ll give you one guess as to who tapped out. Poor Captain. Barreta put on the Tiger Mask afterwards and the real Tiger Mask looked on annoyed. Maybe he gets a partner and comes after the titles. **
Juice Robinson, NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA def. Jushin Thunder Liger, Manabu Nakanishi and Yuji Nagata in 14:44 You just have to love the old man team of Nagata, Nakanishi and Liger. Seeing Juice come out with Shibata, to Shibata’s theme and be all happy go lucky was so strange. Shibata even seemed to look at him confused. Juice got his ass kicked by Nakanishi while we got previews of the two upcoming Wrestling Dontaku matches from the other four again. Again, you got the feeling that Shibata and Nagata wanted to kill each other. I enjoyed KUSHIDA wrestling Liger again but something about Nagata and Shibata felt special. Shibata put down Nakanishi for the win before putting Nagata to sleep with the sleeper hold after it was over. Surprisingly, Liger and KUSHIDA got more physical as they fought into the crowd and continued to do so after the bell. Again, this accomplished the job of making me want to see Wrestling Dontaku even more. ***
BUSHI and SANADA def. Gedo and Kazuchika Okada in 13:34 Obviously, this served as a preview of the upcoming Okada vs. SANADA match. With no Tetsuya Naito involved, Okada was the clear crowd favorite in this thing. They had a good back and forth trying to one up each other in the early stages. When BUSHI and Gedo were legal, SANADA and Okada still fought outside, with SANADA choking him with a baseball bat. By the way, all Gedo matches should have no commentary. Hearing him shout vulgarities is always great. There was a great moment where SANADA countered the Rainmaker into a dragon sleeper though it was broken up. He did win with the dragon sleeper, though it was on Gedo. This was a fine way to build to Wrestling Dontaku. After the match, Okada went after SANADA, even shoving a Young Lion down. BUSHI spit mist in his face, allowing them to beat him up. ***
Hirooki Goto and ROH World Television Champion Tomohiro Ishii def. EVIL and IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito in 16:26 With Ishii vs. Naito and EVIL vs. Goto set for Wrestling Dontaku, this worked as a perfect setup for those matches. Instead of allowing the laid back Los Ingobernables crew dictate the pace, Ishii and Goto attacked before the bell and beat them up outside for a bit, which I liked. Considering the attack at the end of the last show, it made sense. Brawling was the name of the game during the match. Fighting outside, choking with foreign objects and steel chairs were all part of it. There were some really close calls down the stretch as the final few minutes of this were certainly exciting. Ishii got the win for his team after some lariats and a Brainbuster on EVIL. Good effort from everyone involved, especially EVIL, who has really come on strong in 2016. ***½
Special Elimination Match: The Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, IWGP Tag Team Champions the Guerillas of Destiny, IWGP Intercontinental Champion Kenny Omega and Yujiro Takahashi) def. Great Bash Heel, NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions Hiroshi Tanahashi, Michael Elgin and Yoshitatsu in 27:48 Like the previous night’s main event, you could be eliminated via pinfall, submission or getting thrown over the top rope. Omega used his “Howard Finkel” voice to do his own intro before deciding against it and having the BC attack the faces. It was a while before we got any eliminations and it was Tanga Roa that went first. Togi Makabe went over the top and out shortly after. Tama Tonga was doing very well before fighting on the apron with Honma. Fale accidentally knocked Tonga out before using the Grenade to send Honma out. Tanahashi and Fale went at it until Fale dumped him over. Elgin ran in and clotheslined Fale right over, leaving it down to Omega, Takahashi, Yoshitatsu and Elgin. Using a powerbomb, Elgin pinned Takahashi to eliminate him. It seemingly came down to Omega and Elgin, who gave us a great preview of their upcoming title match. Omega managed to take Elgin over and eliminate him. He thought he won but Yoshitatsu was still alive. They went back and forth and teased the Styles Clash again. Yoshitatsu had some hope spots but fell to the One Winged Angel. Another solid elimination match from everyone involved. ***¼
Overall: 6.5/10. Not as fun as yesterday’s show but still rather solid. The main event was pretty enjoyable, most things clocked in around three stars and the semi-main event was the best thing on the card. Again, it did a good job of setting up the upcoming shows so it succeeded there.

The Elite have cashed in their rematch clause and the six man tag match at Dontaku will now be for the NEVER Trios Titles
Also I love how they are building up Sanada as a equal threat to Okada, with him showing that he knows how to counter The Rainmaker and transition it into his finisher The Skull End (Dragon Sleeper)
