Joey Styles definitely fit the ECW crowd. He brought hype when hype was warranted, he called the matches, moves, angles, etc very well.
It didn't translate nearly so well to WWE's style. Yes... Joey had a Styles Clash. I didn't want to make the joke, but well, it's true.

Here's what people don't get about the Styles promo: WWE was presenting him to be the heel here. I seriously to this day don't think Vince realizes that fans were largely nodding their heads in agreement with 95% of what Styles had to say. To Vince here was this ungrateful douche whining about all of these things and lashing out against the greatness of WWE's form of entertainment.
I do find it interesting that Styles railed against WWE's racy content when ECW did a lot of insane things too. They mocked God with the whole Sandman "crucified" angle, did pregnancy angles before WWE, incessant profane language, violence galore, etc. Thus it was always odd to hear Styles present ECW as some sort of serious wrestling traditionalists.

Uncanny what letting someone write his own stuff can do. Instead of having 30 writers do it.

You forgot "I'm not good enough to call BACKLASH??" As if Backlash was the worst piece of shit ever. I think his point was that he understood being bumped to one Mania match, but that Backlash was "just another ppv" and he was lead announcer. Not necessarily that Backlash was a piece of shit.

Make of that what you will: And Matt Hardy wishing Edge would die in a car crash. I wouldn't be surprised it that was the catalyst to Vince getting more controlling over promo output.

I liked it better than Punk's, honestly. It's hard comparing them to each other because they were both very different.
The thing that always struck me about Punk was how he didn't seem that upset or anything. I liked his promo, but when they classified it as pipebomb, I disagreed due to the delivery of it. It wasn't explosive, nor did it seem like he was more dangerous by telling us what he did. You could say he was venting his frustrations but he did it in such a way, it was almost like he was laughing at a sinking ship, no fault of his own of course, hence not a threatening pipebomb.
Styles on the other hand came off as genuinely disgusted, frustrated, and burnt out from his time in WWE. Too bad they blew their chance to do more with it.

I'll give ECW this, when the fans didn't appreciate it and it made Kurt Angle leave the arena they had Raven apologize for the crucification of Sandman and they stopped it before it could continue.

Too bad they blew their chance to do more with it. The perfect summary of WWE since 2006.

Other guys have tried to be that "fight announcer" during WWE matches but with the exception of current SD, it's...never worked. Striker tries it, comes off as "markish" and the other announcers openly make fun of him for k nowing what the guys' moves are called.

Probably not a popular opinion here but I thought it was idiotic and I have no idea why they let him do that.

Hated Joey Styles during this time period. He came off as the most unprofessional prick imaginable.

It didn't do anything for me. Joey Styles was not the first and certainly won't be the last WWE announcer who has been looked over or mistreated in the company. He wasn't any different than Coach, Kevin Kelly, Josh Matthews, or anyone else during that era. Heyman's shoot had a but more authority behind it but ultimately Punk was the only guy qualified to cut a shoot since he's the one sacrificing his body 300 days of the year and putting up with the physical/mental toll that Styles could never possible imagine.
