Basing this off the Orton V Benoit thread, was this the performance that elevated Randy as a upcoming star. This is still easily one of my favorite Orton matches and in true Mick Foley fashion he was able to add a dimension to someone elses character that wasn't there before. The thumbtacks spot in the match and Kings commentary following it is hilarious.

That thumbtack spot is iconic to me, so yeah, I'd definitely say it was the match that made Orton a star

One of my favorite matches. Orton looked like a million bucks for surviving the beating he took, and it was easily the last great match of Foley's career. Mick clearly dug down deep for this one

Orton earned his stripes in this match. It absolutely cemented him as one of the guys in the future. He looked like a star coming out of it.

IIRC it was an important match to show Orton was willing to take a real beating in a match and wasn't just a pretty boy. Same IIRC that they had Jibble bust open Cena in that awful manner at Judgment Day 2005, to test the resolve of the young guys.

I still cannot get my head around veteran wrestlers "giving back"
I mean I understand the sentiment, and Foley's time was done, but being a fan, I hated seeing him go out a loser who couldn't go anymore.
Orton wasn't of my time really, but as it was noted, this made him bigger -I just hated seeing a guy I was a fan of lose at his own game.

It's the old territory mentality - go out on your back to put the next big star over.

I've no issue with it in principle, but it's kinda hard for a slimy heel like Orton to cheat in a match like this.

For a guy like Foley who loves this business as much as he does, it only made sense for him to go out giving the future a big rub. With nothing else to do in his career, the best thing for him to do was to put a young guy who needed it over by beating a bonafide legend like himself.

Also, it's not like Orton won a glorified squash. He barely knocked off Foley after an absolute war.

Probably the best match I ever seen live. I also got Mick Foleys autograph after the show. He seemed to be really aware and was extremely witty with the fans. Its almost hard to believe he was majorly concussed during that match but I guess it's f***ed up on a guy who has had multiple concussions can handle their concussions like how an alcoholic can hold his liquor.
I also remember a lot of people who claimed that thumbtack spot was fake and they used packets of blood. Also after the match some fan told Orton you f***ing sick, and he responded with "So does your f***ing country."

Very inspirational match, Abyss used that gif as the basis for his entire career.

Absolutely. It literally bestowed some respect from fans to Ransy whereas before it was a lt of doubt and criticism. Mainly because he was getting this very protected, entitled push. Man, Ish does not change.
