All the discussion of film criticism (or preemptive criticism in the case of James Rolfe's Ghostbusters video) got me thinking about the Internet versus traditional media in terms of film reviews/criticism. Which had me thinking, is there really anything in terms of film critics on television any more? Gene Shalit is retired, Siskel & Ebert are dead. Is Roeper still carrying on their show? It seems like the closest we have to that is the entertainment reporter for the local newscast reviewing movies. But since it is just a segment on a newscast the review is limited to whether or not they liked the movie and whether or not it's appropriate to bring the kids to it.

Roeper is now a co-host on Fox32 Good Day Chicago. He does reviews it seems for his youtube channel and weighs on films on the show, but it's not a regular gig anymore.
With social media and internet has made these type of shows irrelevent. The big movies are released in Europe and Asia a month before North America and if you're on an social media, you'd hear how it was already and make a decision. It might help with smaller films, but they usually get limited releases anyway and not easy to find if you are interested.

Mark Kermode does reviews for the BBC News Channel every week, though he's better known for his radio show format

I thought about this when I saw commercials for films and the first review was usually from Rotten Tomatoes

According to Wikipedia, Leonard Maltin still has one or two cable gigs doing it. Not sure how current that info is, though.
