Never played Dragon Quest. Is it like early FF games? Or more like Chrono Trigger? Illusion of Gaia?

I recently tried out playing Dragon Quest 3 with both the NES and SNES versions and even the SNES one as improved as it is has still aged like milk.

I mean, they are over 30 years old by now, and a lot of what they did inspired a shitload of other JRPGs. It's sorta like The Seinfield Effect.

Probably a lot of nostalgia involved, but I still really enjoy 1 and 3. 2 is fun until the last stretch where it becomes a f***ing nightmare
EDIT: My buddy and I do a play through of 1 about once a year on a drunken weekend. I have many fond memories of that game, definitely the first RPG I ever played

The Dragon Quest trilogy is no longer Japan exclusive. Only played 8, 11 and both Builders (loved all of those, gonna rebuy 11 on Switch even) and these original three after researchng the series are the only other ones I've wanted to check out, so I'm pleased.

Yeh I really want to buy builder 2 eventually. Not a big old school turn rpg fan.So not big on the DQ main line games

I played the first three. I remember liking two and three for the most part. Did play some of IV, but just got stuck playing the poker game until I got bored and stopped with the game altogether.

Square Enix is far too keen on these mobile versions in general. Those kind of ports are rarely better than console ones (Sonic 1 & 2 aside), but SE ones especially have pretty lackluster art most of the time.

The Final Fantasy 6 one for instance is pretty damned ugly. The Dragon Quest ones are pretty bad too... as they have the Sprite based backgrounds and the smooth character models clash something fierce. not sure why they didn't release for instance... the SNES ports.

I don't really understand how Square is as bad at mobile ports as they are. The Chrono Trigger one basically has every conceivable thing go wrong with it.

Well, that's a bit of a downer about the DQ ports... and that font is awful. I would've have preferred updates or the snes/gba ports.

It makes me think of how, occasionally, some dumbasses will try to remake Chrono Trigger in RPG Maker or make sequels, and then put them on Kickstarter, where they get C&D'd like immediately, not like they'd get funded, anyhow.
