We all know the story, Owen hits a reverse piledriver on Austin, injuring Austin's neck. It's a Kiss My Ass match so Austin can't lose, so they wait an ungodly amount of time for Austin to regain enough feeling to roll Owen up.
What if Austin didn't regain feeling? Would they have done what they should have done anyway and eventually stop the match? Random run in to cause a DQ? Have Owen pin Austin and just retcon the stipulation?
Obviously, there's no known answer, its a hypothetical. Just watching the match now and finding it so ridiculous they left Austin there so long and made him move around after being temporarily paralysed.

Could see them do something like Owen does something like a high flying move misses and pulls Austin on top of him.

They should have just stopped the match. f*** the stipulation, there's ways around that, and Austin didn't really do anything with the IC Title anyway, there was no point in the match continuing.

I always figured they could just have Austin kiss his ass and immediately low blow him and give him a stunner. Not perfect - but I don't think it would have been the worst direction in the world.

Wow, I never knew the background of the match.
It was always puzzling to me why Owen just waited around for a really poorly done roll up. Now it makes sense.
As mentioned earlier, the match should have just ended right away. Continuing the match was as reckless as Shawn delivering an elbow drop to a paralyzed guy.

If Austin cannot do the rollup, you stop the damned match and stretcher his ass out. You don't risk more damage. Then, if and when, Austin can return he completely destroys Owen. Owen gets no offense, bleeds and gets stretchered out. Then have Austin go after Bret for putting Owen up to it or something.

Sometimes things like this make my nostalgia rose-tinted glasses fall off. If the same thing happened today, there would be massive outrage that the match wasn't stopped. And in my opinion the outrage would be justified.
They are just damn lucky in retrospect.

A match stoppage for a neck injury doesn't have to be a win/lose type of thing. It's the WWF/E. They change the rules all the time.
All they would've had to do was have Owen taunt Austin about injuring him, and how when he comes back, he needs to kiss his ass, with the announcers, and even authority figures, stating that Owen is wrong, because there was no winner due to the match stoppage. Owen can continue to make the claim for heel heat, and to build the need for Austin to get revenge. When Austin finally recovers, he begins to go after Owen.
I think you can run a nearly identical program as they ended up doing with the "match stopped/no winner" decision.

Obviously, since kayfabe is of the upmost importance, Owen is declared the winner, you strap Austin to the stretcher and before he's wheeled off to the ambulance, you have Owen drop his drawers and lower his butt into Austin's face and fulfill the stipulation. Duh!

If I can overthink it for a bit, overall.. it was a parade of errors that ended up working out.
- Yes, the "X" should have just gone up, match stopped... f*** the storyline and make sure Austin is okay. However, I could see a certain stunned silence in the back... Vince knew Austin was the guy he had to hang the WWF on in order to remain competitive with WCW. I could see his proverbial life flashing before his eyes in that moment and just hoping against hope Austin was just knocked out or got a stinger or something. Kindof a plausible deniability thing. "If we stall for time, maybe it'll all work out." Granted, you sit here and think, in a rational moment.. you just don't do this. But when your very livelihood is on the line, not to mention everyone counting on your company for their own livelihoods... rational doesn't enter. Nobody is 100% rational all the time and usually in the moments you need to be the most, that's when you'll pick the batshit crazy option.
- Austin will always go with the "I had to do something, there was a stipulation" story. But if something worked out in a good way, you can always recon yourself in the moment to be whatever you want. How many people have made a poor decision, it ended up working out better than expected, then started talking about "Oh yeah, that's why I did it this way." Like they had this huge thought process to get out of whatever hole they were about to get in and work things to their end. I feel like this is what happened with Austin. He WAS moving, albeit just a little bit the entire time, but his extremities were clearly not getting any strength. I've read about several wrestlers who, at the moment of an injury, immediately spring to their feet and will themselves to pretend nothing happened. Not because of kayfabe, but out of their own fear of how bad the injury may be. If they can walk it off, finish the match, maybe it was just a bad landing and nothing serious. I feel like Austin going for the rollup was him feeling some kind of relief like, "Wow, I can move! I can finish the match!" Then making his way back to the dressing room, refusing assistance... yes there was a certain "That's what Stone Cold would do" about it, but I feel he was also freaked out and wanted to get back himself before his mind could confirm how bad his injury actually was. Because whenever something bad happens, your mind is the first one to f*** with you.
Honestly, this is a situation where we know what happened. Austin went on to have an iconic next couple years, he's alive and well, happy, doing exactly what he wants to do... it's one of those things where it all ended up working out for the best so the reasons people did what they did back then aren't as bad, even in hindsight. But, you can't discredit the fact that in that moment... one bad piledriver, and for a few minutes after... everyone involved in making decisions had a LOT of decisions to make, and even if they weren't the right ones for the situation... at least they ended up working out.

They should have stopped the match and had Owen run around bragging about injuring Austin and that he still needs to kiss his ass.... set up the rematch

Well since they just "forgot" about Jim Neidhart's stipulation of him sahving off his goatee if any member of the HF lost, they would probably just bypass it especially if Austin was injured. They would have likely played up the fact he was injured and couldnt appear and then slowly foregt it, or they could have also built it up for Owen callig him out for weeks saying he needs to kiss his ass then have Austin have a big return and just stunner the f*** out of him.
