I can just hear Austin grumbling about it now.
"John, you've been using the STF for how many years and your girlfriend busted out a much better one on her first attempt. I done told you to cinch that sumbitch in more already, step up your damn game, son."

Cena legit put Edge to sleep with the STF once. He has been very careful about how he applies it ever since. I reckon that might be the explanation to the perceived softness of his stf.

Pretty good.
Still not an STF though (the F is for facelock, that's a Sleeper)

Sigh. Look, I get it. Compare Nikki to one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Yaas Queen and all that. That image comes up and we all smile and go, boy oh boy that's funny. I mean, what would the late great Misawa Mitsuharu, Tiger Mask II, the successor to the incomparable Jumbo Tsuruta say? The king of puroresu, a talent so revered that he could name his company after Noah's Flood? Come on. A little respect. I know this is wrestling, but c'mon. He has more five-star matches than any other wrestler in history, according to Meltzer. His rivalry with Kawada Toshiaki is the stuff of legend. His wars with Kobashi Kenta are the standard to which pro wrestling, the greatest sport known to man, should aspire to. I'm sure that he would say that the real truth should not be concealed. What all smarks would know immediately when seeing her apply the STF. What would that great man say? He'd say "Masahiro Chono done taught her that shit." Chono is that dude and always be that dude aka The Original Boss. But even he would tip his hat and say: "That STF was taught to me by the OG of OGs, Lou Thez."

I loved the transition into it as well. Brie did a lovely transition into the YES lock at Wrestlemania; those Bella girls and their transitions.
What made it look so good was that it looked like she was trying to hurt Natalya, and Natalya sold it like she was in a lot of pain. It sounds obvious but it's amazing how often wrestlers don't look like they're trying to inflict pain with a submission, and how many wrestlers just lie there expressionless whilst locked in a submission.

I imagine that has to be it. Dude's not dumb, he probably doesn't want to hurt people. The shit's a work. I much rather it look phony than have someone actually get hurt.

If you can't do something in wrestling without it looking good, maybe you'd be better off doing something that can can make look good.

It's surreal to see someone both trained by Misawa and John Cena

Lots of stuff in wrestling doesn't look good but still gets a reaction.

The thing is though, what submissions can Cena do that he can do on anyone? He needs something flashier than a sleeper or boston crab, but he can't use something like the Sharpshooter. I was thinking Torture Rack, but again, can't do in on everyone.

For a guy as good as Cena is there's got to be a middle ground between choking someone out legit and leaving a gap between their head and his arms wide enough to drive a truck through.

I honestly think it looks so awkward on Cena because he's so big. It often looks like his sheer mass just gets in the way. It looks like more of a smaller wrestler move.
The Edge thing makes sense too.

IIRC, Edge getting knocked out from the STF was when Cena did it on him through a ladder. A spot like that being dangerous is no reason to make the regular variant of the move look so shitty.

Yeah, it's talked about either on one of Cena or Edge's DVDs. And to be honest, his STF frequently looked like shit before that, and continues to look like shit more often than not to this day. The facelock is either applied so loosely his opponent can freely move their head, negating the entire point of the facelock, or applied so far forward it looks like his arms are just going to slide off the sides of his opponent's face.

Cena should just headbutt guys as hard as possible until he gets a trickle of blood down his forehead.
THEN and only then will he be respected by me.

It actually looked painful when she did it.
When Cena does it, it looks like he's playfully humping people.
