The director wasn't the problem. Schumacher was only doing what Warner Brothers were telling him to do. Had he been able to make the Batman movie he wanted, it would have been fine. Bat nipples was his decision. That was the least of the film's problems.

I think Clooney as an Adam West style campy Batman Movie would have been amazing.
And I mean real good camp, not Bat Nipples and whatever the hell the rest of the movie was. It honestly felt like they wanted 50% cheese and 50% serious, and ended up with 100% shit.
The Bat Credit Card was good camp. A good portion of Mr Freeze was great. Rest of it fell flat.
Cheesemaster Mr Freeze vs Batman/Robin/Batgirl could have been great. Poison Ivy honestly felt sorta tacked on. And Bane... whatever that was. Get rid of it.

While Schwarzenegger wouldn't have been my first choice for Mr. Freeze, I really feel with a better director and script he could've pulled it off. What he needed to do was play the character more emotionless and distant, almost exactly like he played the Terminator. But Schumacher wanted a cackling and pun-spouting moron instead. The problem was they didn't know what they wanted out of Freeze. They gave him the cheesy lines from the 60's show... but then tried to give him the tragic backstory from the Animated Series... and then had him just outright killing people... Not to mention WB wanting it to be super Toyetic... which is where a lot of the cheese Schumaker added came from.
