Everyone wanting Sale says the White Sox are asking for too much. That's their problem. The Sox don't "have to" trade him at all. Right, and like I said earlier, I believe Sale is signed through 2019. I could be wrong, but this isn't a year rental and watch him walk away.

While their minor league system is garbage, the main club is realistically a couple of moves away from being a threat to making the playoffs. They can keep Sale & Quintana and build around that. As much as I like the guy, Adam Eaton is on the trading block and you can get a couple of decent prospects for him. I'd aim for a catcher, personally.

While what you say is true, The rekindling of America's love affair with baseball (and a big part of the financial boom) came in large part due to the McGwire/Sosa HR chase in 1998, which was during the height of the steroid era. An era that Selig turned a blind eye to, in spite of some pretty obvious indications that something was seriously amiss. So, I dunno man. I have a problem with guys like Bonds and Clemens being kept out of the HOF for steroid abuse when the guy who was at the wheel when this happened gets in so easily. But the BBWAA are a bunch of hypocritical dicks, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised If I had a Hall of Fame ballot, Bud Selig would be on it just as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens would. I understand the criticism of how can a voter support the guy who enabled the Steroid Era to exist but in turn shun the players who used performance-enhancers to their advantage. But if I'm voting for who belongs in Cooperstown, Selig has just as strong of a case for all he did off the field for the sport of baseball as guys like Bonds and Clemens do for what they were able to achieve on the field. The only Steroid Era players I would not vote for would be the guys who abused the system purely to inflate their power numbers. People like Bonds and Clemens were transcendent, once-in-a-generation players before their alleged PED use began. But guys like Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, or Gary Sheffield - one-dimensional softball sluggers who were trying to hit the ball out of this planet's orbit - don't belong in Cooperstown. Giants sign Mark Melancon to a 4yr 62mil contract That's an absurdly high price to pay for a relief pitcher who turns 32 before Opening Day 2017. I get that Mark Melancon relies more on control than velocity but it's not like he's been some exceptional pitcher throughout his career. He's really only been a revelation for the past four seasons.

Cue the Harper to the Yankees talk. Nationals are balking at his contract demands.

Why aren't the Orioles trying to get Machado signed to an extension? The closer he gets to free agency, the more likely he gets too expensive for them and ultimately leaves Baltimore 1) His agent is Scott Boras, who almost never allows his players to sign contract extensions early without before dipping their toes into free agency. 2) Manny Machado is aware that when he reaches free agency in 2019, barring injury or a massive decline in performance, there will likely be a franchise willing to offer him an absurd contract that the Orioles are not currently willing to pay. It's basic economics: the more people that are interested in your services means the more money in your pocket. Plus, contracts in 2019 might be worth a lot more for elite players than they are in 2016, so it's not unreasonable to think that in three years he could be in for a payday in the neighborhood of $350 to $400 million.

It's totally deserved. He obviously deserves his share of criticism for the 1994 strike that cancelled the World Series, which should be in the first paragraph whenever you discuss the legacy of Bud Selig, but he also oversaw Major League Baseball during a tremendous financial boom in the mid-to-late 1990s and early-2000s, he instituted the Wild Card - making the game much more competitive for proverbial bubble teams, and he helped to avoid a work stoppage in 2002. He wasn't the perfect commissioner but he should be inducted into Cooperstown. But the BBWAA are a bunch of hypocritical dicks, so I guess I shouldn't be surprisedI can't remember the exact number, but prior to Tony La Russa's induction, I read that Mark McGwire was a member of his team for something like 65% of his victories as a manager. So why are we cool with rewarding a guy who directly benefited from the usage of steroids, but not the guy who used them? It makes no sense to me. Also, do all of Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens or Sammy Sosa or any one of those guys' records still count? They stand to this day, so if the MLB doesn't want to vacate these records and still acknowledges them, what makes the BBWAA think they know better than the league? You can go ahead and write on their plaques that they used steroids, but to keep guys like Clemens and Bonds out is preposterous to me.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Nationals have found the Pirates' asking price for Andrew McCutchen to be "too high."

Welcome aboard Melancon. I have no doubt you will be better than Casilla and Romo. The Giants needed a closer. They did exactly what they had too.
Now bring on a power bat somehow. Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson aren't going to cut it in LF, and RF is going to be thin when Pence inevitably blows out a leg muscle again.

Can the Nationals sign anyone of significance? Judging by reading the Twitter tea leaves, it feels like it's a matter of time before the Nationals acquire Chris Sale. The sticking point for both teams appears to be the inclusion of Trea Turner in a deal. The White Sox want him but Washington refuses to put him in any package heading to the Pale Hosers.

Not saying he's bad, but you know it had to be the easiest negotiation in a long time. Melancon's agent: *walks in and puts his feet up on the desk* Giants: We're willing to give him 4 years, 36 million. Melancon's agent: *plays YouTube video of BS'es of the last 2 months* Giants: Fine, just fill out this check yourself.

Rosenthal is saying it's Tyler Thornburg now for Josh Pennington. See post below.

Can the Nationals sign anyone of significance? They need another bullpen arm, a closer, and I guess they're OK with Norris as catcher. When you think about it, the team doesn't have a lot of holes.

I just hope the Cardinals does something to improve the Defense and maintain the offense they had. The pitching looks good enough as long they stay healthy and the pitchers figure things out they kept them from being as good as they can be when it comes to several of them and Lynn comes back strong.

According to Twitter the Giants are going to go with the world-beater combo of Jarrett Parker and/or Mac Williamson in LF.
For their sake, one of them better have an Adam Duvall-like rise or else they're not looking so good in the OF.

(Obviously the last two are just "educated" guesses) Melancon for 62 Jansen for ~80-85+ Chapman for ~90-100 ?
