That Cubs bullpen is going to be something next year.

FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cardinals will sign Dexter Fowler to a five-year deal worth at least $80 million, pending a physical.

I'm glad that we signed Fowler, but the Cubs have become even more of the bastard hell child that the Cards and Red Sox had after a drunken one night stand.

Hoping Fowler is a trojan horse that brings the Cards' offense down from within. Then again, Jason Heyward tried to do the same the other way round, and STILL ended up winning the World Series...

I'm glad Dex got paid. I hope he does well. Maybe the Cardinals can get within 15 games of the Cubs now.

Dombrowski has really gutted the red sox farm system over the past year+. We'll see if it's worth it.

Former Giants prospect (now Brewers prospect) Phil Bickford suspended 50 games for his second positive drug test. Between those and his pre-draft drug pop, I guess I feel a little silly for wanting the entire front-offices head when they traded him for Will Smith.

They got what they deserved with Heyward. He only played well for us because he was looking for his next big payday the following year. He got it and then reverted to his late Braves career ways.

Fowler is a big deal for the Cards after some brutal off-seasons. He's a great leadoff man to add to a lineup that didn't have anyone nearly good enough at that spot. Fowler/Diaz/Carp is a really solid top of the order. And we only sign him until he's 35. I'm not huge on the full NTC, but I really don't think he'll drop off that bad until maybe 33, and by then it's not a complete albatross.
I really don't like the Encarnacion rumors though. He's gonna get too much money, he's a big risk for fall off. And really more than anything else, Busch is not a good HR park. He played in a division where Fenway and Yankee stadium are real bandboxes, and Toronto and Baltimore aren't that far behind. He's a guy who is all power, power, and more power. For the same reason, I don't like Trumbo. But if we got Turner or Abreu if the Sox are completely blowing it up, I'd be pretty happy.

I look at the Heyward situation a different way. There's no denying he was terrible at the plate this year. With that, and Schwarber's injury, the Cubs got very little production out of two hitters the expected to be in the middle of the lineup, and they still won 103 games. If Heyward goes back to being what he was, pre 2016, a mid .700 OPS hitter with +base running and ++defense, the Cubs will be more than happy.

Fowler got a TON in that contract, good Lord. It's asking a lot for him to replicate his numbers from last season. He'll be good, and that old fashioned Cardinals devil magic will probably keep him REALLY good, but that's a pretty big gamble there.
I'm not quite as down on the Eaton deal as others are for a couple of reasons: Nats are clearly pushing their chips all in on the next couple years (before Harper likely walks), and I think the return for Giolito was way down since it was pretty clear that, for one, the Nats were a bit down on him compared to last year, and secondly it's no secret that his velocity and movement were a good deal down this year, as well, so the great market we might've assumed simply wasn't going to be there for him. White Sox still did very well in the deal, no doubt about that, but this isn't particularly catastrophic in my book, given that the Nats still have minor league depth, anyway.
Of course, I'm also biased as a Mets fan, because this just shows the Nats are going all in (and likely aren't done trying to add on) during the same window that the Mets are looking to win, and Eaton likely impacts that pretty negatively for me, so maybe my perception is off. Uehara going to Chicago bugs me, that's the type of deal the Mets should be looking into for their 'pen.

Nationals trade Danny Espinosa to the Angels for Austin Adams and Kyle McGowin. Guess this allows Trea Turner to take the starting SS role.

According to Peter Gammons, the White Sox asked the Astros for Francis Martes, Kyle Tucker and Joe Musgrove in exchange for Jose Quintana.

That Giolito deal has them thinking they can take anyone to the cleaners. And I'm high on Quintana. Not to mention, if anyone has the prospects to spare it's probably Houston. And if anyone needs some pitching, it's also Houston. But I'd hang up on that call immediately.

Interesting thing I read about this story: If you are on a team's 40-man roster, you cannot be suspended for a positive weed test, but will be if you're not on the roster. That seems strangely arbitrary.

I dunno if the BoSox would have picked up Buchholz's option had they known they'd be trading for Sale. They're flush with starting pitching now (Sale, Price, Porcello, Pomeranz, Wright and Rodriguez are all ahead of Clay in the depth chart) and he'd be an expensive option as solely a reliever, so I'm sure they'll look to move him. Though Castillo seems like a steep price, there's very little when it comes to a free agent market for starting pitching, so Boston can aim high when it comes to a return for Buchholz.
