Can't the Lions clinch a playoff spot with a win tomorrow? Yes....a win or a tie clinches a playoff spot for them, but they want the division and they can't clinch that until they face Green Bay next week no matter what happens And meanwhile Green Bay HAS to win to lock up a playoff spot.

A Washington loss would guarantee the loser of Packers-Lions at least a Wildcard berth.
If the Lions win out and both the Saints beat the Falcons and the 49ers beat the Seahawks, Lions will have the other NFC wildcard bye. The Packers cannot get the bye no matter what happens.

So what has to happen for Green Bay to miss the playoffs?

So what has to happen for Green Bay to miss the playoffs? Washington needs to beat the Giants and Green Bay needs to lose to Detroit.

So here's Mike Florio on Derek Carr: wp.me/p14QSB-ad4IOkay, I get it. Raiders are up 19 and the game is over, but here's the thing: Oakland doesn't have the division locked up, which means Carr would've been playing in Week 17, so doesn't that make the argument moot? Also, the Raiders aren't the Pats or Steelers or Packers or any team that is accustomed to recent success. This is all new to them. There's no way Carr himself would've wanted to come out of that game in any circumstances. It's really easy for us to pick apart the decision in retrospect, but I truly think you can't fault the Raiders here.

They were also only up 19 on a team whose only real team-wide talent is to make improbable comebacks. Benching Carr would have yielded the same result of him getting hurt; McGloin goes out there and the odds of a Colts comeback goes way up. The game wound up as a one score game as it was and if Cooper had not made that amazing catch do you really think Luck did not have a chance to goes down the field in two minutes to tie it? I'd have left Carr in at that point.

Speaking Monday, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said there have been "no conversations" about playing Tony Romo in Week 17, but admitted that could change.

The six AFC playoff teams are set heading into week 17, but only two of the seeds will be determined going into the final week of the regular season. There will be three games next Sunday (Patriots at Dolphins, Raiders at Broncos, Chiefs at Chargers) that will determine the no. 1, 2, 5, and 6 seeds. There are a lot of complicated scenarios that could play out over the course of about six hours next week, and this handy image floating around on Twitter lays it all out: For my own selfish reasons, I'm most fascinated by the Patriots scenario. They have a first-round bye clinched and can finish no worse than second in the AFC but they play the Dolphins, who are starting a backup quarterback and have already clinched a playoff spot and need a few things to go their way (most difficult among them relying on the Chargers to beat the Chiefs) to clinch the fifth seed. I wonder if the Dolphins will just call off the dogs and rest their starters - most notably Jay Ajayi who suffered an AC joint injury in his left shoulder Sunday in Buffalo - and accept the no. 6 seed and a trip to Pittsburgh in the Wild Card round or if they'll go for it and hope for the best and a road game at Houston. Conversely, I wonder if the Patriots think it's even worth it to go all-out for homefield advantage, considering the only road game they would have to play in the AFC playoffs would be in Oakland against a Matt McGloin-led Raiders. During week 17 of the 2015 season, the Patriots pulled back and basically ran a preseason offense against the Dolphins, yet Tom Brady also nearly got injured when Ndamukong Suh went low on a sack attempt. That said, if they lay off and Oakland upsets Denver, the Patriots would likely play the Steelers in the Divisional Round and Pittsburgh feels like the only team in the AFC that could stand a chance to beat the Patriots in the playoffs.

I think not fully depends on the health of Brady. If he is ailing, I do one or two series with him and accept the #2 seed, especially since it will be the de facto 1 seed with Carr's injury. I do anticipate the Dolphins going all out next week in an effort to get that trip to Houston (I also sort of want them to go there as well since KC/Houston would be bowling shoes ugly).

I don't even know for sure if a Patriots loss in Miami assures them the no. 2 seed. The Raiders would still need to beat the Broncos to vault over the Patriots for the no. 1 seed and with all due respect to Matt McGloin, I'm not extremely confident in his ability to go into the Mile High air and beat a Broncos defense that is playing for pride after getting embarrassed on national television last night. The Broncos might not have anything to play for in the standings, but I'm willing to bet they don't want to end their season with four straight losses to fall to 8-8 after starting the season 4-0.

The problem with the Pats losing is that it would give them the cursed 13-3 record. No AFC team wants that record.

I would not rule out a Patriots victory even if Brady is benched after a few series. Garoppolo gave me enough confidence that he could win a game against the Dolphins after his performances in six quarters earlier in the season (two of which were against Miami).
