The latest Illumination Studios (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets) movie is coming out very soon & I have to say its easily the worst film of their series.
Its basically CGI animals singing dated songs in a non ironic manner for the whole film.

You don't know that. It's not out yet. Unless you somehow already saw it.

Someone refresh my memory... did Illumination split off from Dreamworks at some point or have they always been their own thing?
From what I've seen so far it looks like the creative team saw Zootopia, completely missed the point of everything except the anthro animals, and decided to pair it with the overcooked pop culture references of a lot of the Shrek series only even more so and in a way that will be even more dated.

They have always been seperate (though now they are both owned by NBC) The guy that founded Illumination used to work on Fox Animation like Ice Age. Also Sing started being written on January 2014... Zootopia wasn't in it's final script form until November 2014.

From what I remember he said it was "alright" Yeah, I don't think it looks necessarily "OMG SO GREAT", more like a middle-of-the-road family film. We'll see. Like one time I was with a cousin at the mall and I took them to see Mr. Peabody & Sherman, thinking "eh, it'll be cute but not much else." Then I got hit with a feels bomb. So I know I can be surprised.

To me, it looks like a movie by boardroom. Like they tried to come up with a formula to build a successful movie and this is what they came up with.

I'm geeked up for this one. And the song list sounds great.

It looks so awful. Now if they were singing original songs written for the film then I could respect that but it's just them singing the usual crap.

The problem with this kind of film is that because it takes years to make these CG animated films, it's always going to be outdated. Sing doesn't look like the worst film of this type ever (that particular award goes to Norm of the North), but it looks pretty average.

Zootopia wasn't in it's final script form until November 2014. Thanks for clearing that up. For some reason I never really noticed them until this year since you had both this and Secret Life of Pets advertised like crazy here in the city. Didn't realize Sing has been in production for so long. Honestly, my biggest complaint so far other than the instant datedness is the fact that honestly I still honestly can't tell what the plot is past "Koala holds an audition to give characters a chance to sing pop culture tunes". It comes off more like a justification for something like Kidsongs, but not like a feature length film.

It's why you always go for a stylized arts type instead of a just kinda generic anthromporhised animal design.

Oh I don't think its a terrible film; its more like the Cars of Illumination. And I agree Norm is the worst. It doesn't look great but it doesn't seem to be that bad.

I grew to hate this movie during the Olympics. That's right. There were a lot of spots that were shown during the Olympics, for a movie that wasn't out for another four months at that point.

Just seen it today and I have to say, it is honestly surprisingly good. There is some good, funny moments there and the cast really do make good on the music. The naimation is wonderful in spots and the performances at the end are really great. Not perfect and could have done with a bit more fleshing out, but honestly a fun movie. Formulaic, but that by no means that it's bad.

Illumination did that with Secret Life of Pets, too. They're probably like one bomb away from some massive firings, since it's been working so far, but it has to be very expensive, the absurd amount of over-marketing for their films. Still so weird to me that Ben by Michael Jackson is in the film, and it isn't performed by a rat. Seems like a really obvious thing to f*** up.

As long as there is no Smash Mouth songs.. it should be ok right? They're saving those for Shrek V...and I would honestly bet the house that they will at least play All Star during the trailer just grab the lapsed fans by the member berries.
