Nah, Backlund's shoulda been longer, he was awesome.
Plus it really helped Owen's jealous/in the shadow of Bret character to be one step behind his brother.

It has been stated before in the thread, but the answer to the question is no. Backlund was the right person to win the title and drop it immediately to Big Daddy Cool. One thing I didn't see mentioned is that it didn't add another new champion to the still, at the time, heavily protected lineage. Owen furthered his character and feud with what he did. It probably made him a more over and vilified heel in the process.
IF Owen should have won the title in that era, it should have been at SummerSlam. He could have won in the cage with outside interference making it a very non-clean finish for the title change. Owen could then hold it for a few months before losing it to Diesel, after another dirty win over Bret at SurSeries. This would have made Owen look like a bigger deal top level heel and possibly cemented him as a main even player for years to come. They would have to do some creative booking as champion to make him look like a strong, cheating champion though...and some big time damage control after the squash match, which was going to happen in the Garden no mater how we fantasy book.

Backlund gave the promo of his life after his win. That is worth him winning alone.

Just plain no. The Bret/Owen feud was 1 year of the best writing/booking/wrestling the WWF/E has ever done. Every single domino that fell in that feud was perfect. Owen winning at Summerslam would have made Bret look inferior to Owen, losing at the two biggest shows of the year. Owen didn't have the rocketship (sorry) tied to him, so it doesn't make sense for him to still be a lower card guy at Rumble, then champ at SS. The problem was the follow-up to he feud made Owen look less like a guy who was elevated to the main event and more like exactly the guy he was before.
Owen would have completely lost all momentum immediately if he jobbed to Diesel in 10 seconds, and that part of this timeline is an absolute no doubter. Vinny loved him some Diesel, and there's no way to put him over as big with a competitive match.

No. I'm not a huge Kevin Nash fan, but the guy was insanely over. The bad booking really hurt him.
