Telling sign of how much Nintendo's trying to recoup any losses with the Wii U. At this point, its only high profile games not released for other systems are Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros U, and Splatoon. And given the possibility of Switch ports it may not be true for even those soon enough. Considering we got a Mario platformed, a Mario Kart game, a new Splatoon, a port of the remastered Skyrim on the way, & rumors of a Pokemon Stars & Super Smash Bros., Nintendo might be putting all their eggs into the Switch basket.

Well they kind of have to at this point. They are likely trying to start out guns blazing and try to win back all the Nintendo fans that got burned on the Wii U.

I was planning to get the switch for Breath of the Wild, but looks like it is the only way

Hey, it works for gamers if the Switch has a full library by the end of 2017.

If BOTW Wii U is canceled, the only Wii U traditional Zelda games will have been remastered ports of two older Zelda games (Wind waker and Twilight princess) not counting Virtual Console titles The first Nintendo system (not counting the Virtual Boy since it was dead before any Zelda ideas could even be considered) to not have an original official Zelda game in its line up (not counting Hyrule Warriors)

I will be SO PISSED if this is the case. I know people who just got a Wii U and the only reason why I'm keeping mine around is for this. This would be the final nail in the coffin for the system. No lie...I picked up a WiiU on sale just for BotW. If this is true I'll just sell it and get a Switch. I have never not played a Zelda game.

Honestly business-wise it'd be a smart move. Being exclusive is about the only way Breath of the Wild is going to move any Switches, though even then Zelda isn't the huge massive crossover hit Nintendo tends to make it out to be so it'll probably only do so much of that.
Granted same token that pretty much kills the chances of me actually playing Breath of the Wild at launch. I think it looks like a whole lot of what I don't want in a Zelda game (mostly since I think Zelda games are at their best when they're around 15 hours instead of being bloated epics, I tend to just see vast wilderness between missions in games as irritating busywork, and the plot loses points right off the bat for me because Ganon is easily the least interesting Zelda villain), and the rumored line-up for the first few months of the Switch isn't exactly convincing me to plop the money down on the thing right from the get-go. I'd maybe be willing to go ahead and spend $60 on Breath of the Wild despite my reservations on it but not several hundred dollars on it.

It's something like the 16th best selling franchise in history. The Link Amiibo was by far the best selling amiibo in every region except Australia where it was 3rd. it's mainline series has always sold multiple millions of copies. It is absolutely one of Nintendo's biggest franchises behind Mario and Pokemon.

Oh, yeah, absolutely is, not saying it's not a massive deal, it's just not going to singlehandedly give the system a giant head start the way something like Pokemon or Mario, or really possibly even Animal Crossing, would do. Zelda definitely makes money and it definitely is important but it's not really a lynchpin of things on its own, especially since its games' individual sales are pretty inconsistent.

That sucks for people who had bought a Wii U primarily for this game
