We embarked on our first proper journey to Middle-earth and the result is one of the finest trilogies to ever grace the silver screen.

the mines is STILL one of the most bad ass sequences in movies it's simplicity and THAT END makes it that
my sister saw it first and raved about it saw it myself about a week later, and went to see it again saw it on skymovies when we had it a LOT then a few more times with the extended version
STILL my favourite one out of the six

Peter Jackson did a lot to cut out a ton of unnecessary stuff in these movies and save for one or two changes I think they were better stories because of it.
not to mention some of the insane details he put into things like each of the orc's equipment basically being individually forged to tell a story...

In other news the casting director recently mentioned that David Bowie was in heavy consideration for Gandalf... I love Bowie... but I don't see it.

Peter Jackson did a lot to cut out a ton of unnecessary stuff in these movies and save for one or two changes I think they were better stories because of it. I love the books and have read them countless times, but even I have to admit there's a ton of filler, plot elements that make no sense (Faramir being immune to the power of the One Ring), and characters that are either underdeveloped (Arwen) or overdeveloped (Tom Bombadil) for their level of importance. Short of a Game of Thrones-style series, I don't see any way of making a better screen adaptation. to be fair he didn't want anything to do with the Hobbit movie and was pulled on at like the last moment. Yeah, I'm quite willing to give Jackson a pass on The Hobbit trilogy as there was a mountain of problems involved in that production from start to finish. Del Toro bailing out, studio interference, switching from two movies to three, from two Hobbit movies and a LOTR prequel to three Hobbit movies, and having to eschew the mostly practical effects used so well in LOTR in favour of CGI just so they could make the movies on time... I can't help but wonder how much better they would've been if Jackson had been able to make them with the same level of freedom and time he had with LOTR.

It's a great trilogy. Diluted by a sub par but not terrible prequel trilogy.
Rewatched the LOTR trilogy recently and it just reminded me how underwhelming the Hobbit movies were. Funny I don't feel the same way about Star Wars which had a much worse prequel trilogy. I guess it's cause I knew the Hobbit(s) should have been great.. Had good talent making it, based on good source material. While I knew that the Star Wars prequels were just George Lucas and a marketing machine ruining shit.
Anyway.

Two friends of mine were huge fans of the books and basically dragged me to see this opening night.
On the way home I asked them if I could borrow the books. Read it at least once a year.

Don't forget pages and pages of songs sometimes written in multiple languages. and yeah, Bombadil gets so many pages dedicated to him which the movie rendered obsolete by just having Gandalf tell Frodo to meet him at the Prancing Pony as that is literally his only real point in the book.

Anyone ever go to one of the marathons?
I did the LOTR extended edition marathon at the theater. I wouldn't do it a second time as it was quite the endurance test, but it was a fun way to watch the movies.

My favorite piece of music from the trilogy.
It just warms my heart listening to it.

My favorite piece of music from the trilogy. It just warms my heart listening to it. I can listen to any music for the Shire or Rohan almost indefinitely.
