This thread gets a thumbs down. Sorry Limity (BLM), but Green Day are GODS. I'm with you on this one. They were my favorite band in the 90's and still remain my favorite band today. I'm actually going to see them and Against Me! in March. I'm pretty stoked about that.

Looking at the cover of Kerrang now it would probably be bands like Pierce The Veil, Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Black Veil Brides, Pvris etc. Green Day and Panic! At The Disco seem popular still.

This thread just makes me feel like an abnormal idiot all over again...I talked about this in that thread I made about musical taste, but reading this thread just brings forth the worries/feelings I've had lately towards my musical taste, and how I'm abnormal because of it. I mean, I listen to mostly only rap/hip hop (and it's subgenres) and metal (specifically black metal and death metal, although I do listen to a little bit of other metal stuff as well, such as Babymetal) and I've read multiple people online say that only teenagers listen to those genres and it's been driving me insane...and on top of that, there is the whole 'angst' thing. A lot of the music in the genres I listen to could be considered 'angry' or aggressive, but I was never 'angsty' as a teenager and I don't understand the stereotype...and I don't listen to any of the music I listen to now (or back then for that matter) to be 'angsty' or whatever, I listen to it because I like the way it sounds. Whatever...long story short, I don't understand the 'angsty teenager' thing, I don't understand people who say that only teenagers listen to the sort of music that I like and I'm sick of feeling like I'm wrong and abnormal for liking the music that I like. ...sorry about that. This has been bothering me for the last couple of days and reading this thread made me have to get it off my chest.

My niece likes Green Day and something called Twenty One Pilots. Kids are still in to Green Day? They were big when I was a teenager well over a decade ago. Well, her father and I were into Green Day and she started listening and I guess she likes it. She also liked the Runaways movie and wanted to hear some of the Runaways stuff in my collection. I'm more than happy to help her get into music and also support her current musical interests (now: Twenty One Pilots last year: Taylor Swift).

You'll be a lot happier that way. I blasted tons of stereotypical "angry youth" bands in high school. KoRn, NIN, Deftones, RATM, you name it. Still like a lot of those acts today.

This has been bothering me for the last couple of days and reading this thread made me have to get it off my chest. This is similar to the way I am about pop music, bubblegum pop in particular. I'll hear about "that really stupid song" or something about how only morons like a particular artist. Then at some point, I'll happen across a song and instantly love it, only to soon learn how it's the aforementioned anthem of only the most idiotic teenagers (and dimmest young adults). Being over thirty and possessing what I presume to be serviceable intelligence, it kind of bothered me when I first started noticing it. Especially given how I spent my actual teens and early twenties as a pretentious, pseudo intellectual butthead. Nowadays though, I don't worry too much about it. I likes what I likes, and there's no need for anyone to feel the need to justify their entertainments choices. Just live and let live

They moved on to Metalcore.
Like, the internet means noone has to pay attention to the radio these days so there's more than one mainstream. Metalcore tends to be the one most teens who'd previously be into emo are now into.
There's also Deathcore which is more extreme, but the people who listen to that are the dudebros that beat me up in highschool for being an emo.

There's no age when it comes to music. Reading that makes me feel better about it. As I said in that thread I made on the subject a short while back, I listened to pretty much nothing but rap from the time I was 9 or 10 up until I was 25 or 26, and only very recently in the last couple of years I've become a big fan of black metal (as well as some other metal styles, but mainly black metal) and I felt weird for discovering it at such a 'late' age, especially when there are internet articles which claim that scientific studies have 'proven' that people stop liking new/different music once they reach 25...I felt especially weird about those articles considering the exact opposite happened to me.

It's pretty much all metal and rap with teens these days. I was actually astonished when I worked with a bunch of nicer (which is to say SAWFT) white kids this year and all they listened to was like mix tapes and shit. Like rap has always been popular when it came out, but it seems not just more popular now, but the kids are like deep into it. They are always talking about who released songs that week, and they know way more than just the singles. Which is all that me and my friends listened to growing up. Metal is up there, too. Both of them seem like genres where it's not at all about radio. Informed kids know who the best acts are, and I've never heard of 80% of them.
There's still 21 Pilots for more emo kids, and bands like ADTR and Bring Me The Horizon for slightly less emo kids. But alternative music is definitely getting squeezed in terms of popularity. And really, that's fair. There's not a lot of good new acts out. That's the genre I'm into most, personally, and it's getting really hard to find new listens because bands are either already in my Spotify or they stink.

It has to be Twenty One Pilots. Heathens seems to be written by an angry angsty spooky 13 year old who is bragging on how edgy and crazy his friends are. So basically, it was the perfect song to represent the Suicide Squad movie.

This has been bothering me for the last couple of days and reading this thread made me have to get it off my chest. In my opinion, people throw the "teen angst music" label around to dismiss the integrity of the music, the creativity, and/or the musicians because they don't personally like it. People slap labels on things because it helps (in their minds) to "justify" or bring validity to their own opinions. It's self-serving. Art is just art. That's where "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" shines. That's also why I don't like or believe in the idea of "guilty pleasures." You shouldn't feel guilty about enjoying something that brings you pleasure. You only feel guilty because you've allowed other people to project their opinions onto you. It's rubbish to me. Sort of a tangent from the rest of the thread; sorry for getting off topic. GET OFF MY LAWN!

I would say the shit like Pierce The Veil, Bring Me The Horizon, and Of Mice & Men. Alongside that, Five Finger Death Punch, Avenged Sevenfold, stuff like that.... you gotta remember, this generation exists in a world that has always had music readily available via the internet to download or stream so the scope is much larger. Especially in rock, as someone who is really into it will tend to find other bands and continue on regardless of it being mainstream or not. While pop radio will stay on task as it caters to a casual listener.
In that, I think it's tough to put a finger on exactly what IS the "angsty" music of the day, but I'd say it's definitely along the lines stated.
