It's pretty funny how stuff evolves, given that in the 40s, as the article says, the song could be interpreted as empowering for women, but with changing social moors, sayings and word usage, and various other things, its lyrics take on an entirely different meaning in the modern era. Somebody could probably write a pretty in-depth book about that happening in pop culture, and not just in a "LOL they called the 1890s the 'Gay Nineties', isn't that weird today?" way.

So in the original song, she stays.........because of the implication?
Well I know one person who's very disappointed with the update

I hear this song, multiple versions of it in fact, at work and they all sound very unsettling mainly because of the guy. He sounds very predatory in the song.

I've also been playing around with theories that "Santa Baby" is about prostitution and "Silent Night" is about cannibalism. Am I the only one who's caught this?

My "favourite" version is sung by Tom Jones, who of course is a notorious womaniser, and Cerys Matthews, who's battled alcoholism (and was doing so around the time of the song's release, IIRC). Just the perfect storm of creepy.

I was going to suggest just switching who sings which verse! Heh, it's kinda sexier that way too. Great version!

Yeah, it's a song 100% steeped in 1940's culture. Were a woman being in the same room with a man alone was scandalous. the entire point of the song is that she doesn't want to leave but is worried that she'd get labelled a whore if she stays. but since that's not as much of a thing anymore... it does take on a rather... uh... sinister sound to it

This is all a bunch of agitprop from the estate of Parson Brown is just trying to maintain "Winter Wonderland's" top tier holiday status.

We don't need any verson of Baby, It's Cool Outside because This Christmas exists. It's a nice, soulful, and consentual song about f***ing the holidays away.

So, if no one listened to the version in the OP. It's very much about a woman who is desperately waiting for the oblivious guy to make a frikkin move. Or about a very friendzoned woman.

Howard Stern's version featuring Bill Cosby is the best.
