It might not be terrible, but it'd just be really generic. See something like Robocop (which I actually didn't hate the new one, was just ok) or Total Recall (didn't see); like those it had the perfect storm of cast, writing, etc to make it a classic. Just doing the story or formula without them would just create a hollow, forgettable experience.

I could see Christoph Waltz making a good Doc Brown.

All women, of course. Plus Lorraine having a lesbian crush on her daughter would be so progressive! Why not an all-female remake of Top Gun, complete with the gay subtext?

This is a concept that a friend and I have talked about and we both agree it wouldn't work. The fish out of water concept works because culturally, or at least in popular culture, teens in the pre-Elvis days were not focused and marketed to in the ways they were after Rock exploded. Add to that that cable tv, home video, reruns and later the internet means that our popular culture has expanded but nothing once permeates to a certain level ever leaves it. So probably very few teens in 1985 were listening to do wop from 1955 but many in 2015 were probably listing to rock or hip hop released in 2015. So the audiences loses that fish out of water aspect of the film which is where a lot of the comedy came from.

Where a lost teenage ends up in the year 1987 after time travelling from the year 2017 will it have the line "So future boy/girl..who is the president in 2017?" "Donald Trump" "...." Wonder what 1987 doc brown would think of 2017 smart phone video technology and an "entire record store in your pocket" ipod. Surprised they havnt produced it already what with the insane amount of remakes and stuff "..and I suppose Linda McMahon is the head of small business..." And let's end the Trump/Linda references right there, please.

I guess you could try to flip it so that they time travel and are amazed so much is the same. "Ok future boy, what are kids playing with?" "Transformers and Ninja Turtles" "Pah! so after 30 years, no one thought up anything better than those 2 idiotic fads?"

I am usually not opposed to reboots unlike a lot of people. I didn't hate the 2014 RoboCop film, though I thought it was mostly "meh." I didn't like Point Break, the one that came out last year, but that's because I thought it had bad writing and phoned-in acting (I liked the stunts and visuals, though). I actually liked Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. However, I don't want to see a reboot of Back To The Future. I would rather see a spinoff or something, but not a reboot. This is actually one of my all-time favorite films and this is also one of those cases where I wouldn't want to see a reboot.

I had an idea for a Back to the Future reboot featuring Steve Carell as Doc Brown and Chloe Grace Moretz as Marsha "Marty" McFly. Marty would be a teenager from 2015 who travels back in time to when her parents were in High School in 1985.
The story would center around Marty's relationship with her mother, who walked out on her and her father when she was a small child, leaving Marty's father an emotional mess barely getting by. Arriving back in 1985 and seeing her Mom as basically the schools alpha bitch, she would at first be very angry and resentful of her, then after getting to know her and seeing the screwed up upbringing she had, she eventually starts to sympathize with her and helps her out. When Marty returns to 2015 she discovers her parents never broke up and her home life is much more stable then when she left. I'm leaving out a lot of big pieces but that's the gist of it.

I'm so glad this property is safe from bring rebooted. I've thought about it and there's no actor that can fill in Michael J. Foxs boots.

Kinda wish a few more people took this stance on things... though most people don't have the clout of Spielberg. I've heard Sylvester Stallone took the same stance when a Rocky remake was being discussed. Good. They'd miss the entire damn point and either cast a well known actor, or have him win at the end.q
