From favourite to least favourite. 1. Kuja (great dialogue, huge body count, thong) 2. Hojo (despicable bastard) 3. Kefka 4. The Turks 5. {Spoiler}Ardyn (cool personality and look, interesting backstory) 6. Sephiroth 7. Cidolfus 8. Golbez 9. Vayne 10. Seifer 11. Ultimecia 12. Caius 13. Shuyin 14. Barthandelus 15. Seymour (bad design, annoying voice, got whooped four times, kind of interesting back story, though) Left some out because I haven't played the games or I don't care.

Definitely agree with your two bookends. Kuja was amazing. A true narcissistic sociopath. He realized he was going to die, so.....he decided that if he had to, the whole world was gonna go with him. It's bratty, petty, childish, and amazing. Seymour, on the other hand, had a great villainous backstory, but was so utterly killable at every opportunity...

I think it says a lot about Seymour as a villain that his last encounter/boss fight is literally just a speed bump on the way to somewhere more awesome/important.

Is Seymour really the main villain? I'd say it's Sin itself or {Spoiler}Yevon Yu or even the whole Yevon Church, of which Seymour is not even the highest-ranking member. Although he did orchestrate {Spoiler}the slaughter of the Ronso so that's kind of his bastard moment.

OK then Final Fantasy 6 Kefka - Fun and funny in a lot of scenes 10/10 You love him and hate him. Cant think of anyone else.
Final Fantasy 7 Sepherioth - He make the most sense of anyone in this game...That's not a compliment. 5/10 Hojo - Loved him in every scene he is in. Kicking his ass was very satisfying. 10/10....unless you add Dirge of Cerberus....then 2/10 Rufas Shinra - Doesnt really do all that much 5/10 The Turks - Loved them 8/10 needed more game time and development.
Final Fantasy 8 Ultimecia - Who was she? What did she want? Why was she bad? We will never know. 1/10 The fight takes too long.
Final Fantasy 9 Kuja - Didnt play far enough to get to him, so no ranking Zorn and Thorn - I liked them and the idea of them. I felt they were killed off too early though. 7/10 Black Waltz 1/2/3 - I didnt like having only Zidane so didnt like BW1, 2 Was the best one as you had a party and this was the first chance to see them in action.. 3 Was a bit too easy after the challenge of the first two. 5/10
Final Fantasy 10 Seymour - Admit it, you laughed the first time you saw him. He looks ridiculous. But his fights are very annoying and I enjoyed the challenge of them 6/10 The 4th fight was overkill and I was sick of him by them. SinSpawn Kilika - My favourte battle for the same reasons as BW 2 in 9. You get too see what the party can really do. 9/10 Sin - Loved it and the concept of it. Godzilla in Final Fantasy worked really well. 10/10 The most intimidating boss of them all. Braska's Final Aeon/Jecht - I loved this fight, the music is perfect and I still rate it the best boss fight in all FF's/ 11/10 Yu Yevon - A perfect example of an anti climax. -10/10 What were Square thinking with this giant waste of time??
10-2 Shuyen Or whatever his name is. Considering how many people hated Tidus, I would think they loved the chance to kill him, but nope. 2/10 I hated every minute of this fight and though Vegnagun looked stupid...That mouth cannon made it look even stupider.

Currently redoing X, so Seymour is currently at the front of my mind.
I wouldn't term him a series defining good villain, but f*** do I hate him and did so from his character's introduction. He's like Final Fantasy's Vickie Guerrero. It's just, stop. Just stop. If Yuna were not a plot point, Kimahri or Auron or somebody would've killed him immediately.

Lighting, because she killed my interest in the genre for a good few years. But you can be her in like twelve games now. .. Don't be you want to put her in stupid custom outfits and navigate corridors doing hack spaz fights until the end of time? She's a strong woman, you see? That's why they can't just let her breathe and have to Reigns push her.

1 and 2 are a coin flip for me
1. FFXV villain(This villain really feels like a return to form for the series) 2. Kuja 3. Sephiroth 4. Seifer 5. Gabranth 6. Hojo 7. Seymour 8. Kefka 9. Ultimecia 10. Golbez 11. Caius 12. Vayne 13. Barthandelus
I didn't list villains like Shuyin because I simply didn't care for them. Also 12 to 13 is a massive jump because I thought Vayne was somewhat decent but Barthandelus was absolutely awful.

I'll rank the villains by game as it's much easier to group them together than list individuals, especially with the series' penchant for having puppet master villains and surprise final bosses.
1. Final Fantasy VI (Kefka, Gestahl, etc.) 2. Final Fantasy IX (Kuja, Brahne, etc.) 3. Final Fantasy IV (Golbez, Zemus, Four Fiends, etc.) 4. Final Fantasy XIV (Gaius, Ascians, etc.) 5. Final Fantasy VII (Jenova, Sephiroth, Shinra Inc., etc.) 6. Final Fantasy VIII (Ultimecia, Edea, Seifer, etc.) 7. Final Fantasy X (Sin, Yevon, etc.) 8. Final Fantasy II (Emperor Mateus) 9. Final Fantasy V (Exdeath, Gilgamesh, etc.) 10. Final Fantasy XI (Shadow Lord, Lilith, Promathia, etc.) 11. Final Fantasy III (Xande, Cloud of Darkness, etc) 12. Final Fantasy XII (Vayne, Venat, etc.) 13. Final Fantasy (Garland, Chaos, etc.) 14. Final Fantasy XIII (Barthandelus, Sanctum, etc)

I won't do all the villains, as it's been a long time since I've played some of the games and, and some I have not and thus would only be basing it off of design.
1: Delita (FFTactics): I know he's not the villain in the traditional sense (ie: You don't actually fight him). But in terms of narrative, he is totally a villain to me. He's conniving, he's willing to sacrifice people for his own gain, and he shows complete contempt for people standing in his way. He is also completely, totally justified in his hatred, though he is wiling to do anything and everything to get there. He's one of the most subtly done characters in the history of the series.l
2: Kuja (FFIX): I agree with most of the previous analysis of him. A complete and total sociopath who is willing to watch the world burn because he doesn't like the fate he knows he can't change. It makes it so satisfying to face and beat.
3: Kefka (FFVI): One of the only villains to actually get what he wanted, a chaotic world where he was king. It made what is usually a dull part in final fantasy games much more interesting, even with the hokey "Defeated by the power of friendship" vibe they gave off at the end.
4: Sin (FFX): There's so much weight behind the villain here that it's a shame that his more mortal foil in Seymour is so awful. Sin was this larger than life entity that you couldn't imagine actually being able to take down without some sort of deus-ex machina.
5: Sephiroth (FFVII): I didn't like FFVII that much. I base that on a lot of factors, such as the fact that I played games where main characters died well before it, games with more complex stories before it, and the hype just not matching up to that. But I can't fault how well they built Sephiroth as a villain. He was present throughout as this larger than life entity, he killed a main party member, and the presentation of the final battle was really just perfect in how epic it was. I mean, his story was a bit crappy, but everything about his build was great.
6: Golbez (FFIV): He provided a perfect foil for Cecil throughout this story, providing a surprisingly complex story arc for the era of the game.
7: Ex Death (FFV): The good thing about him is that he has a good presence for a decent portion of the game, as opposed to some other villains. His attitude is fitting for the villain and his fight is extremely annoying.
8: Seifer (FFVIII): As far as rivals go, he's sort of meh. He was never really able to convince me tht he was a real threat, and he just comes across as overly whiny to me.
9: Shuyin (FFX-2): Being Tidus-lite doesn't help, nor does the absolutely bonkers Vegnagun design. To his credit, at least his backstory is pretty good.
10: Garland/Chaos (FFI): You can't really expect a whole lot from an NES RPG, but at the very least he had a presence in the game before the end.
11: Barthandalus (FFXIII): The most unfortunate chart of this villain is that he could have been better. I mean, his plan isn't the most awful one in the series. But the plot of this game is so awful that they somehow decided that the way to beat the main villain was "YOLO, We'll do what he wants," and that's where it all falls apart.
12: Seymour (FFX): When you have a villain as intimidating as Sin, it's near impossible to have a human villain that can play off of it. But they were so far off the mark with him that it's almost criminal. His design is awful, his battles are more annoying than enjoyably challenging, and by the end I'm so done with him that I just tuned him out.
13: Ultimecia/Ozma/Zeromus/any villain that shows up right at the end. I hate this trick they do, where the final villain is someone who don't know about until the last act without any actual build up. It'd be one thing if they were an ever present force throughout the story, like Yevon wound up being, but this more reeks of them having a design they wanted to use but no idea how to work them in.

ExDeath ranks high, because it's a f***ing tree, and that's totally fine. Also, he saw fit to employ Gilgamesh, as well as shoot him to another dimension, letting him crossover into other titles.

Only Final Fantasy game I ever played was VII. So my perspective is obviously based off of my experience with that particular game. For me personally I'd have to say Sephiroth is my top and only choice because of my lack of experience with previous Final Fantasy's and afterwards too.
I can remember absolutely loathing him with a burning passion after he killed Aeris. That scene where he impales her with his sword, gives you that evil troll like smirk, and I can just recall very vividly mashing buttons trying to skip the scene so I can attempt to kill him.

Not really Surprised not seeing more love for Caius. Despite the flaws in the series itself I thought he was a pretty good villain.

Not really Surprised not seeing more love for Caius. Despite the flaws in the series itself I thought he was a pretty good villain. He was definitely one of the best characters in the 13 franchise. I just ranked him so low because I only ranked villains I really liked, so he's definitely ahead of a lot of villains in the series for me. I know it's fun to shit on 13 and everything but I honestly thought 13-2 was damn good game.

To me it is the best in that series with 13 and then lighting returns coming last. But yea Caius is Def someone that will get overlooked for those who don't like 13 games at all.

I think Jenova was more of a villain than Sephy.
