I've heard Jim Cornette and Raven both talk about how back in the day these events made tons of money and thousands of people would go because in the morning fans would open presents and then at night after Christmas dinner they'd have nothing to do so they'd go to a wrestling show.
Would this work today? Assuming that you can find both talent and a building who are willing to work Christmas could you pull a respectable crowd to a show on Christmas? I think it could be quite the event, you could have Santa make an appearance and hand out Christmas gifts, you could have cheap/free tickets for the kids (Great Christmas gifts) and if you, your fans and your talent are local you could be home in time to put the kids to bed at a respectable time.
For me I think this idea would work for an established local independent who offers a family friendly product. What do you think?

About 9 years ago the NWA fed in MS tried out a X-mas day show. And drew the normal 20 to 30 people they normally drew.

Christmas Day, there are too many alternatives - movies, TV specials, people go away, relatives who aren't wrestling fans visit, everyone wants to try out their new gifts. A better holiday to run an indy show IMO is New Year's Eve. I met the promoter of my local indy, and floated the idea to him as a suggestion. If it works, it's more affordable than the big events, in a smaller town, people aren't battling traffic and paying through the nose for parking, and you have about 2-3 hours of entertainment that ends right before midnight, so everyone can do the countdown.

I'd have thought a live wrestling show on Christmas night would have been popular. I thought most people are bored out of their minds by the middle of the afternoon when all the presents have been opened and all the food eaten. Going to a live wrestling show would also provide a perfect excuse to escape those annoying family members who make your festive period unbearable!

I don't think it would work now. Wrestling is too oversaturated now. It's too easy to see between all the shows on television and the internet. The live event experience isn't as attractive to people anymore. There are also a lot more choices or alternatives for people to spend their time entertaining themselves now. There also isn't the star power out there anymore. You don't have a crew like the Mid-Atlantic or NWA rosters of the 70s or the popularity of the Von Erichs during the 80s in World Class. It's just a different time.

Makes you wonder what would happen if you had 200 regulars AND went all out on advertising for a Christmas show. The place they ran most of their shows at,could hold 150 tops. And that would be standing room only. It was a tiny place in small MS town. They lost it when the fire marshal came in and found all kinds of fire code violations. Keep hearing that the city knew of the fire code violations for years, but wasn't until they started getting complaints about "the demons" some of the Battlezone guys were facing that the city sent in the fire marshal.

It's just a different time. This is something I thought may be an issue. A lot of "name" guys are celebrating with their families and it isn't worth the payday to them. Even wrestlers who might not be Christian are still likely enjoying the day off with their families. If you have a good enough local crew though I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to draw with some strong local matches. better holiday to run an indy show IMO is New Year's Eve. That's true and even if you're in the city a show starting at 8 and ending at 11 gives everyone time to leave the show and head off to the city fireworks or the countdown in the town centre or whatever. And me and my girlfriend just a few days ago were talking about what we were going to do New Years during the day because nothing is on until like 8-9 when our city starts a celebration of sorts.

Weren't shows that took place on Christmas day usually taped in advance? I remember how there was a Raw on Christmas day in 2000 but I read how that was actually taped.

I don't even see the other benefit if you're doing this besides just those. If you do it New Year's Eve, then the countdown itself has a huge benefit since you can do a lot of awesome things with New Year's Eve: Book an Iron Man match at 11:30 (or even 11 if you have some good performers) and bill the main event as the "Final Match of the Year" with the countdown in Times Square to the new year as the countdown clock for an Iron Man Match- and if you have writers (or if you're a big show, can get some big names), make a plot point after midnight for some HUGE plot point in the promotion- a major angle begins, a huge debut, etc.

This is referring to actual live events happening on Christmas night. A lot of the territories would do big shows on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and do some of their largest attendances on those nights. I think that yes, it could still work now. If everyone's favorite promotion built everything to culminate at a big Christmas night show, most would plan to attend. On a holiday like that, virtually everybody doesn't have to go to work or school, so everybody is, in theory, able to potentially attend. Do the family thing on Christmas eve or during the afternoon on Christmas day, then go to the show Christmas night.
