In the grand scheme of things despite the mess it had, I don't look at that series too negatively.
Final Fantasy 13 had its troubles but could of easily been a one and done game with a logical conclusion. It didn't help matters that you had characters who were unlikable or dry which was the majority of the cast.
Final Fantasy 13-2 I believe was a damn good game and if it was a stand alone not part of the series it would be looked at more favorably. The story in itself was good and Caius to me was one of the major reasons the game held up in my eyes.
Lightening Returns was meh. For me it was the lesser of all three with a sloppy story and bad ending that tried wrap everything in a bow. That was purely a last ditch money grab.
What are your thoughts on the series?

I absolutely hate it. Tried to play 13 once for like two hours when my then roomate was at work. I do recognize that 13-2 and Lightning Returns seem better, but I don't care. They've lost me.

My friend is like the only person I know who adores these games, and his pitch to me for the first one in all seriousness was "just give it 40 hours and it gets really good" and then he got offended when I said at that point he probably just developed Stockholm syndrome. He's not the only one I've seen use that argument either. It's wild. There are so many other things I'd rather give 40 hours to.

I heard from other people as well after 20/30 it gets good. Jesus. Wouldn't you be better just playing a good game for 20hours?

easily the worst games in the franchise. bunch of nonsense with a plot so dense and ridiculous you need flowcharts to understand why anyone is doing anything. characters so insipid even Ali Hillis and Troy Freaking Baker couldn't salvage anything. deserves all the flack it gets and even when the game "opens up" 40 hours or so in it's still a colossal waste of time and there are about a million other games you could be playing instead.

Series as a whole. Not just the first game

There were some good ideas here and there, but it was a bit of a mess overall. Though XIII-2 is easily the highlight of the trilogy and a fairly good game in its own right.

I liked part 1 and 2, but hated 13-3 and it's way of leveling up your stats, I beat it once and never looked back.

I liked them.
13 was decent but I didn't enjoy the story or characters(except for Hope, his character progression was really good and made a lot of sense after his mother's death). There was a lot I did enjoy though. I thought the battle system was really good, I really liked the whole paradigm shift stuff. The soundtrack was excellent, I actually listened to it a lot in XV.
13-2 was really good. The story was a big step up from 13 and it had a pretty memorable villain in Caius. Serah was way more likeable than Lightning and Noel, who was also really likeable, had an interesting story. It also had a great soundtrack(sadly, it's missing from XV) and I liked the battle system where you use a monster as your third party member. It's also the opposite of 13 in terms of hallway walking, there's a lot of open areas to explore and the game isn't linear at all.
I never played Lightning Returns because it didn't seem interesting to me and I didn't care for Lightning.
If the collection rumour is true, I'll pick it up to replay 13 and 13-2.

Lightning Returns is easily worst of the 3. Tho it gets a little points for having Snow become a beast. Edit - No 13-2 soundtrack in 15 f***. Say what you will about 13 series but that soundtrack is soo good

13 was one of the worst RPG's I have ever played, and hated damn near everything about it.
I didn't bother with the rest of the series after that.

So what happened in 13-3? Did they all stay f***ed at the end of 13-2?

So what happened in 13-3? Did they all stay f***ed at the end of 13-2? Yea. Chaos came and ruled over the world for like 500 years. Lightning came out of here crystal State thanks to the gods and was the prophesied savior of the world. Sazh became reclusive after his son went into a "coma/deep sleep" when chaos came. Vanille and Fang are unfrozen. Snow becomes menacing after Seras death. Noel becomes disillusioned with the world. Hope helps lightning throughout her journey. All conflicts you got to solve.

It's a game people will either love or hate. A coworker didn't like it whilst I did.
Although the backlash against Hope is uncalled for. Calling him whining and does nothing but complain.
Considering you're been branded and cursed to become a mindless monster if you don't fulfill your duty and even if you do, your "reward" by the godly pricks who've branded you is to turn into a statue until they have need of you again. And you've got no fighting abilities or knowledge of combat and the only weapon on you is your toy boomerang, I'd be reacting the same way over my situation.

Haven't played any of the sequels but FFXIII was shit.
I don't mind linear games as long as the maps are large and give the impression of freedom with side areas to find loot and such. FFXIII though took the piss with straight corridor after straight corridor.
The story was confusing and shit. The characters unlikeable. No towns. No sidequests or side games as a distraction. Bad dialogue. No good character moments between the members of the team. It was a bad game.
What annoys me the most though is all the reviews before release were giving it 8/10 and 9/10. I'd have given it 4.

Wasn't a fan though there were points I did enjoy about them. The music was beautiful and I pretty much have it on loop while playing 15. I liked Lightning for the most part, though their obsession with making her the next Cloud was annoying. Overall though the plot was a mess and the game, as said by many, was just one long hallway.

I thought XIII was decent. It's definitely carried by the battle system, though, which one of the best in any FF. I liked Lightning and Sazh, but Hope and Vanille are two of the worst FF chars ever. Funny thing about the story is that it's really easy to understand but they gave everything fancy names that made it confusing the first time.
I personally thought XII-2 was the worst one. Serah and Noel were dull as dirt, and they were the only two chars. The story was even more confusing, but the music was pretty good.
I actually really liked Lightning Returns. It had a really fun battle system.
Honestly, I think XIII might get looked back on more fondly after people have played XV, sort of like with what's happening with XII.

The battle system is another thing I hated as the game pretty much played itself.
You had control of one character and usually the best option in any fight was to hit the auto attack button.
