There's also their leveling system; from what I can recall, whenever you level up, the monsters also get stronger, though there are commands that will allow you to lower or increase the monster's level. By raising the level higher, it'll be harder to defeat, but you'll get higher-valued items. Also, Meltdown is a necessity. Finally, Cactuar Island is the best place for AP farming (each Cactuar is worth 20 AP) without gaining a lot of EXP. Be sure to junction a lot of Triples on the Hit Rate, as the Cactuars are very evasive, and are strong against magic. The side effect of this being that leveling up is actually a detriment to you in the game, but grinding for cards is just as tedious. Ugh.... I have "fond" memories of grinding for cards just to turn them into Adamantine because I liked Squall as a character so much that I was GOING TO GIVE HIM THE LIONHEART, DAMMIT. Of course once you did that Squall's Limit Break got stupidly powerful, but whatever...all dat adamantine tho...

it's a decent but not great game hurt both by being rushed and being sandwiched between 2 of the best games in the franchise.

I'd say that Final Fantasy VIII is the most divisive entry in the series. The people who are fans absolutely love it. The people who hate it act like it's the worst game ever made.
I wouldn't call it one of my favorites. I think it's one of the weaker entries in the series. But it's worth playing. Triple Triad is the best sidegame the series has ever had, stupid rule variants aside. The gameplay systems are interesting, though IMO poorly executed in some places (mostly in the execution of the junction system and the game's level scaling being completely out of whack. Getting new weapons can also get really obnoxious). The characters are a mixed bag, though the secondary protagonist team of Laguna, Ward, and Kiros are a lot of fun to play as when you get the chance. I personally liked Quistis, Zell, Irvine, and even Selphie. Villains are pretty good. The story is also pretty interesting outside of a couple of really dumb plot points. And if nothing else, the music is some of the best in the series.
Though I'm not sure how good the various ports/re-releases are compared to the PSX original (which I have). I just know the original PC release suffered from Trashy PC Port Of A Console Game Syndrome.

It's really flawed but I love it. I think my favourite thing about it is the world. Balamb Garden/Town, Dollet, Delling, Ultimecia's Castle, Esthar, Timber are really nice/cool looking places.

Of course once you did that Squall's Limit Break got stupidly powerful, but whatever...all dat adamantine tho... Yeah, Squall and Zell could flat out break the game with their limits. Boss Battle Zell: Limit Break Left Right, O X, Left Right, O X, Repeat until time runs out or boss dies I seriously used that strategy to kill the 'unkillable' robot that you fight at the end of your first big mission. The one that the game tells you to run away from. Anyway... This was my first FF game I ever played, so maybe some bias, but I still like it. Not in my top 5 FF games, but definitely in my top 10. I liked the characters well enough, only one I didn't really like was Irvine because, much like Auron in 10, I really dislike the party member who knows what's going on but doesn't bother to tell anyone until AFTER it would have been helpful. Siefer was a twat, too, but that's what he was supposed to be, so I guess it's fine. The story started out fine and a little generic before flying off the rails and throwing all sorts of what-the-f***ery at you with little rhyme, reason or even forewarning. I mean, stopping wars and killing an evil sorceress is one thing, but breaking time by going to the past to merge with yourself so you can go to the future and rule the world even though there's nothing really left to rule over (I think...?), or how about monsters living on the moon and invading Earth by gathering together in a gigantic ball that eventually bursts like the galaxy's largest pimple spewing itself all over the planet? Just... f***ing weird stuff, dude. The plot twist of- {Spoiler}"We all were in the same orphanage as kids" -was pretty lame, too. I didn't have much of an issue with the Junction system, in fact I thought the in-game tutorial explained it just fine. The only thing I did hate about it was that you had to pick and choose which special moves you could use in battle and were only able to pick three at a time; you could go the standard route and have Draw, GFs and Items, but then you can't use any of the unique moves that you learn from your GFs, which made your characters kind of hard to customize. Gameplay-wise, I thought it was actually kind of cool that the point of the battle was to NOT level up, mostly because I'd never heard of that in an RPG before. It did take some getting used to, since the knee-jerk reaction to any RPG battle is kill all the enemies you come across, but the process of keeping your levels low and using your GFs and Junction system to grow stronger was a nice idea for its time. I even loved playing the card game, especially since playing it actually served a purpose by making the game easier. It was certainly a better alternative to 9's card game or 10's Blitzball. And Eyes on Me was a great song!
