Now this is something I absolutely HATE. Still, the threat looms that I may have to do this tomorrow...and I have a flight to catch. Yep, no way I'm getting stuck if there's anyway I can help it.
Anyway, share stories.

We fight like wild dogs at my work to get overtime, never understood people who see it as a burden.

my last job my bosses kept trying to do that. I'd remind them it was illegal as f*** and I wasn't doing it and they'd leave me alone.

Sticking it to the man Blanket in hand too I bet The only time I wanted a blanket while sitting on the toilet was when the furnace shut off and it was -40 outside. I thought I got frostbite on my ass.

Being a state employee, we have mandatory lists. Sadly, since second shift always seems to magically need three more people per lving unit then my shift does (first shift, when there's tons of patient movement), they run through us so we get held at least every other week.

I have that at work too. I do doubles so I don't get mandated. It sucks when you're about to leave and you get held over

THey read a mandatory overtime list in roll call, but if you're not on that specific named list and you volunteer, you don't get to move to the bottom of the list again, so now no one volunteers unless their name gets called.

It hasn't usually been a problem except for last week:
Last week, I was about to leave at 11 for my normal time leaving. I drew the short straw and they asked me to stay until closing. (It's another hour, and I would have gladly stayed late if they asked me beforehand, so it's not a problem.)
The problem: Because they asked me too late- it bumped my shift up to six hours (and thus, state law required I get a 30 minute break that I have to clock out for instead of a 15 minute break I don't have to clock out for.)
And because it was so late, I was the only cashier left in the building.
...and because I was the only one left, I had to run the tobacco counter...oh, and it's ALSO state law that I can't leave the tobacco counter unattended- so I'm literally breaking the law no matter what I do.
...and if they told me earlier, I could take a 30 minute break and cash my check, so I don't have a problem when I leave and don't have a late bill the next day because my money's not in my account, so I don't have THAT.
...FML.

I know that's not fair but it's my way of skating the rules That was how we did it for years, they'd ask for volunteers to work the needed spots and peopel would say "ok, I have something to do in two days after work, so instead of risking getting held then, I'll work today", but then we had someone moved into the director position who said, quotign directly, "it's my way or the highway now, I don't care what rules say" and given that she's notorious for doing just that, no one higher up will touch her in case she goes through with the lawsuit she threatened.

I get paid hourly. Anything over 40 is time and a half, and I work predominantly in schools and town buildings, so they're empty (or emptier) and the works usually easier. I'll work overtime whenever I get the chance.

I don't mind just as long as they don't tell me five minutes before my shift ends that I have to stay an hour more

We fight like wild dogs at my work to get overtime, never understood people who see it as a burden. At my place of work, time away is far more valuable than time and a half. Ironically, a lot of us, myself included, had the ability to pick up overtime shifts at another facility, which we gladly did. The warden at our facility tried to put a stop to it, and I politely explained that he can't tell us what to do on our scheduled days off, and that I would continue to work overtime at that other facility, where officers are actually valued and appreciated. I won that battle, but he never forgot.

If the weather is shitty and I have no plans I'll work overtime, by choice, all the time.
If the fish are biting/have other plans/beautiful weather? Hell no. Life is too short to not enjoy it.

My clinic is open on Saturday and we have one person a week there, so I usually pick up one a month for extra spending money. Other than that, I'm salaried and it doesn't matter if I get off early or late to determine my pay.
