New year, new motorsports thread. NHRA kicks things off with the Winternationals in early February, then action starts in Daytona for the newly-christened Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (as well as Xfinity, Trucks and ARCA), with Indy Car, and F1 not far behind. (If I didn't mention your preferred series, I apologize.) Since I like to spout once in a while about Supercross, that starts in Anaheim this weekend as well. If it has an engine, this is your place to sound off!

As I said above, the Monster Energy Supercross season fires up this weekend with the first Anaheim race of the season. Ryan Dungey will bear the #1 plate for the second consecutive season, and the 2-time defending champion is the odds-on favorite for a three-peat. Dungey's teammate Marvin Musquin had a decent first year in the 450 class, and the French rider looks to be a strong contender. Last year's runner-up, Ken Roczen switched from Suzuki to Honda and is looking to ride the red team to the top of the standings. Jason Anderson rose to prominence last season and brought Husqvarna their first-ever Supercross win on his way to a third-place finish in the standings. Other top competitors to look for include Eli Tomac, Cole Seely, Justin Brayton, and the veteran Chad Reed. One of the major stories from the offseason is the switch from laps to a time format. For both classes, heat races will be 5 minutes plus one lap. The 450 semi's will be 4 minutes plus 1 lap. Both Last Chance Qualifiers will be 3 minutes plus one lap. The 250 Main Event will be 15 minutes plus one lap, and the 450's will be 20 and a lap. And as is tradition, here is the track map for this weekend's Anaheim 1 event:

The Formula One rumor mill has Valteri Bottas in replacing Rosberg at Mercedes. He'll be a definite number 2 to Hamil-douche.

Ken Roczen won the first Supercross event of the season in Anaheim. He jetted out to the holeshot lead and never looked back. Ryan Dungey finished second and Dungey's Red Bull KTM teammate Marvin Musquin rounded out the podium. Kawasaki's Eli Tomac started out hot on the heels of Roczen but faded to finish 5th. Jason Anderson, on a Husqvarna, finished 4th. Trey Canard, teammate of Dungey and Roczen, was scratched from the main event with a shoulder injury. Shane Mcelreth won in the 250's, followed by Aaron Plesinger and Martin Davalos. This week, the series moves south to San Diego. Aaaaaannnnnd MAP!

I love seeing how Supercross utilizes the space they have in these stadiums and ball parks.

I love seeing how Supercross utilizes the space they have in these stadiums and ball parks. Its great. That's why I love the track maps. The layouts are so interesting and intricate now. Back in the multi-use stadium days, there were a few layouts and they were all rectangular. The job they do now is amazing. Plus, as with Saturday's race, the different lines they created are cool as well. Made for great racing.

Wow. So does someone fill the 19 or the what? Also, what the hell. Is Jones locked into the 77 team, or did JGR "loan" him to Furniture Row? If he is only "on loan", could they call him back? If not, they probably call up Suarez. He's already in with Arris, and the media coverage would be HUGE.

What the hell is Edwards thinking? I sort of wonder if Arris pulled a power play here and told Gibbs that they wanted Suarez in the cup car they sponsor and they want him there _now_. And if Carl had been on the fence about retirement anyway and that just pushed him over the edge.

Yeah, Suarez is getting the 19 ride. There was a rumor that Fox Sports and Carl had come to a deal for him to join their broadcast team and that is what prompted this but Fox denies it.

So just like his buddy, John Cena, Carl went Hollywood. But he's a NASCAR guy, so I guess Carl went Daytona, or Charlotte...something like that.

Did find it awkward this comes out a day after Toyota unveiled the new Camry for the '17 season.
Unless Carl thinks the new Camry is a drastic racing downgrade from a year ago, I found the timing very odd.

That came out of nowhere. On one hand it could be as simple as him being burned out on motorsports and basically being encouraged by Rosberg's retirement. On another hand it's so sudden and so complete that the more pessimistic speculating part of my brain makes me wonder if there are health issues or something involved.
