Would this give Disney a chance to fully get the movie rights to Spidey back? So they wouldn't have to split the profits? It would, I believe. I don't think Sony could sell their Spider-Man rights since they're essentially on lease from Disney. It'd be like leaving your apartment, then trying to rent it out yourself.

Wait a minute. Spider-Man Homecoming is a guarantee hit as Spidey is Sony's biggest cash cow. You mean to tell me they're relying on an animated film about Emoji's to keep them afloat? Come on now. They're only sharing licensing rights with Disney/Marvel. In the end they still have final creative say, distribution rights, and box office receipts.

And we are all forgetting about a major franchise Sony has control over - Bond.
Think about this: what if Disney says they want it all, not just Spider-Man back, but absorb Sony entirely. That would, theoretically, put Star Wars, Marvel, Indy and Bond all under the control of the Mouse.
... wow.

Even if they're splitting the funds with Spidey that's still $$$$. More money than any of us on here will ever see. Along with Bond they really shouldn't be hurting for cash at all. Have all of their film distributions with the exception of Spidey and Bond been flops as of late?

The Interview, which lead to the Spider-Man deal, was a non-starter. The only decent movie was Spectre and that had to be shared with EON. Bluntly, Sony is surviving on co-sharing and the deal with Marvel isn't going to be enough. It's up to The Emoji Movie and the bottom line just may not be enough.

The thing about The Interview was that it was only distributed to a limited number of theaters because of the whole stink about the hack and the possibility of terrorist attacks. It was mainly shown through video-on-demand services. I will say that I actually got to see it in theaters, even though I had to travel to the closest one that was playing it at the time. To bring up other ones that were somewhat successful in the last year, I know that The Angry Birds Movie and Sausage Party were among the few that made the most money. It could argued about the latter being done on a $19 million budget, however. Then you had another one that performed a decent amount like Money Monster, which came out last May. However, the budget was low for that one, too.

No, Marvel have had full creative control over all of Homecoming.
